I was going to do a comic about voting but then I got this menu in the mail and it was a lot more entertaining than anything I probably could’ve done about voting. Simple truth, I’m really bad at talking about politics (which is one of many reasons I hate talking about politics) so I’m going to drop any pretense of it and almost ignore the whole election day thing.
The unique thing about this particular Mexican takeout place is that it’s run by Chinese people. Now, I’m not hating on Chinese Mexican food because I think I’ve heard of this combination before. This happens to be next to the Chinese takeout place that I go to and I know it’s the same owners because I saw some of the staff working on setting it up before it opened. The humor mostly comes from how they’re presenting themselves.
First of all, you look at the menu and it’s laid out EXACTLY like the menus you get at Chinese takeout places with the numbers, the columned and numbered sections with red highlighted items. Except in this particular case the red means that it’s vegetarian. Plus, Quesadillas Sincronizadas? Synchronous Quesadillas? What the hell is that supposed to be? Also if you type mexican bean curd into Google, you don’t get any results. Though since I just mentioned it here in my blurb I’ll probably be the only site that shows up for it.
Also the name of it, New Happy Taco. That really fits the pattern of Chinese takeout places by putting some sort of postive emotional spin on it, like Joy Kitchen or something like that. Also, the no MSG thing really is bolded like that, I think that’s more of a Chinese restaurant thing to emphasize since that’s what they’re notorious for. It also says “Small or Large Parties Are Welcome.” Almost makes it sound like it’s a sit down place with table service.
Their website is the funniest because not only is the content sorely lacking, but it’s clear they paid someone who is used to setting up online stores or maybe a delivery.com sort of thing? It has a place for “my account”, a shopping cart, reviews and all sorts of things which makes it look like you could order the food online. Plus there’re sections of the website which still have the text that looks like it came with the original website package and they haven’t replaced it with their own personal text yet. Also, it says for food items the number of units they have. So if you want the Grilled Chicken they have 500 units in stock. I hope they sell them all, because that stuff will go bad. They don’t even have the full menu in it.
I feel a little bad because this seems like a very ill-conceived idea and it’s clear a lot of money has been put into this with their location, the website and sending out these menus to who knows how many apartments in the area. There’re a bunch of really good Mexican places around here. Though I suppose their menu says they’re actually Tex-Mex food. I have a friend from Texas who I’m sure would like to argue a bit with them on that one.
Oh and if you’re interested they’re at 160 Park Place Between Flatbush Ave and 7th Ave. But it’s more like if you’re heading towards Flatbush from 7th ave you just veer right and you get to it after the liquor store.
