I don’t know if this is just me, but I’m always amused whenever I watch people buying only one or two items at the store. If a guy is buying just toilet paper, he probably really needs to use some toilet paper. If he’s buying just floss then I know he’s going to be flossing later. It’s like this small peek into their life, something I know about them for that brief moment. It’s because of this sort of thinking that I feel a little weird going down the street just holding one item as I come home from the supermarket. It’s like I want to give people around me as little information about me as possible. Of course I know that’s impossible because just looking at how a person dresses gives all sorts of information about them. Even still, I don’t feel the need to give more information.

I was going through receipts when I saw this one. As proof I give you a scan of the actual receipt. Someone at the Key Foods abbreviations department had fun writing this one out. Yes, this receipt turned me into a 3-year old.

I got a jar of JIF peanut butter for myself at my office (they were out of Peter Pan), but turns out “Simply JIF” which sounded to me like the most basic flavor was actually low sodium. I noticed there was also a low-fat JIF. I also saw that low sodium JIF actually has 1 gram less sugar in it than regular. For some reason though, low fat JIF actually has 1 gram MORE sugar than regular JIF. I wonder how this works, did they need to up the sugar to compensate for the taste?

When I was in the Key Food and I overheard a woman saying this VERBATIM to her kid who must’ve been a five year old girl or something. It was also this exact sort of thought out deliberate pace that she said it to the girl. Almost like a Bond villain or something. Seriously, who talks this way to a kid?

This Kick in the Head is brought to you by Peter Pan Peanut Butter.
Just kidding, but it would be pretty transparent is somehow I was sponsored by them. I don’t know when it happened, but all I know is that when I was at Key Food yesterday there it was right next to all the other peanut butters. At this point people have probably plain forgotten the whole salmonella thing. I didn’t get a jar for one because my refrigerator is stuffed with food right now, and I didn’t feel like getting some Lactaid milk. Maybe I’ll get it for work and it can become my afternoon snack…

For once this is something I actually said in this context. Cashier and person before me seemed to think it was funny

I think there’s a certain balance to it all. Key Food is the place where you can buy the reusable bags to bring to the supermarket and the delis don’t have those. Reusable bags seem to be the “it” thing right now I might be caving soon (though my older sister gave me two quite some time ago). Seriously though, I had two cartons of orange juice and a 2 liter bottle of Ginger Ale at the deli. Bag didn’t break, but I think all the blood in my fingers was caught in between the plastic loops.

Yep, I saw it in the supermarket. Well, according to Wikipedia it returned in August 2007 but I hadn’t seen it until yesterday. As for the “new look” it said on the label I really didn’t notice anything different. I guess they just needed the word “new” on it so that people would know it wasn’t an old jar left on the shelf that wasn’t sent back or something.

I still haven’t used these before, but I imagine I could figure it out just fine. I just saw some new ones when I was out grocery shopping. There were four but only two were active. One woman was having trouble so there was a guy there helping her (probably also there to make sure people don’t steal stuff). I had heard from my sister about a similar situation in the Boston MTA. Basically they installed subway card machines, but the user interface of the machines was so poorly designed they had to get someone to stand by the machines and explain it if people were having trouble. Clearly the most efficient way to do things is to eliminate one human job and replace it with another that’s perhaps more annoying to do than the original one.

The Key Food I go to completely redid the floor tiles which was really weird when I went in there. Then I was looking around and I started noticing things I’d never noticed before. I know they did some rearranging, but then I started thinking “Wait, was that there before? Are these shelves new?” I realized that someone going to that Key Food for the first time would forever have a completely different impression. It’s not ghetto by any stretch of the imagination, but it certainly didn’t look as nice when I first moved into the neighborhood. It’s just that for the longest time I’ve had a certain feel for the market based off of my first impression.
Kind of like this Associated supermarket I used to go to Sophomore year, it was pretty dirty and cramped. At one point they changed the lighting around their vegetables which made it look cleaner and nicer, but the overall market to me still felt the same.
