This guy actually only had a shirt with a sign pasted onto it, but any shirt I drew would’ve been too small to put the words onto. Plus he also had a baseball cap that said “I (heart) Jesus.” He was sitting on the subway and I was thinking to myself this same question, where am I supposed to flee to if I take this guy up on it. Then he got up at his stop and I saw the back of his shirt said “Flee to Jesus.” Though then I only wondered isn’t he God? Or even if he isn’t, isn’t he at least in close contact with him? Or is God the bad cop and Jesus the good cop?

Pretty much the only part of this strip that didn’t happen is that I’m not the one who peed on a church. I’m going to protect the identity of the actual person, but they know who they are. I was on the Southeast corner of Washington Square Park when two Asian guys came up to me. I took off my headphones because I assumed they were going to ask me for directions. The guy in front then did exactly this, he asked me if there was a church that I went to or if I had been to church before. His English wasn’t very good though so it took me a second to interpret what he said. I then awkwardly said no, waved goodbye and left them there.
I have no idea where the conversation was going. Either they were going to offer me a church to go to or they needed a church recommended to go to, the possibilities are endless. The other thing I wondered was why did they single me out? Was it because I’m Asian? The scenario I find most amusing is that they took a look at me and thought “Hmmm, you look particularly God-less, I’m going to help this guy out.” I wasn’t wearing anything outrageous though so maybe it’s because I’m Asian and looked like I would listen.

It’s true, I swiped my Metrocard yesterday and my Metrocard does indeed end today. Other than that, I have no worries.

Special thanks to my friend Z for this one. I was having a conversation, but somehow it got to making fun of religious people and the sorts of annoying questions we would’ve asked them if we had to go to Sunday school growing up or something similar. Oh wait, it was a conversation where we were talking about Santa Claus actually. Because we were thinking of how they say you have to be good because Santa is always watching you, so we realized it sounded very creepy if Santa watched us while we were naked too. It’s just a natural transition to God or Jesus when you’re talking about that sort of omniscience.

Funny thing is that it was a lot easier to write the religious crap than to write complete gibberish. Not sure what that says. I remember one time I was listening to this guy spout off complete nonsense (though he was forming actual words) and I was wondering to myself if I should be writing it down because you simply can’t make up some of the stuff these people spout off. I still wonder how often the religious preaching subway types get people to sign up, read their pamphlets or go to church. I’d ask but I’d feel rude.

I guess Christian Conservative groups don’t coordinate much with their friends overseas. I probably could’ve done this in two strips, but the timing of the news stories worked too perfectly, and I don’t need to waste an extra strip bashing conservative religious groups. It makes me sick to think of how much more money that film is going to make when it gets re-released. Aside from having no religious upbringing whatsoever I didn’t care for “The Passion of the Christ” in any regard.
Clearly it had no spiritual impact on me, and from a film standpoint it doesn’t do much except use excessive amounts of slow motion. The cinematography was pretty good and there are some cool shots, but that’s about it. I’d say the only other thing about the film I took out of it was how amusing it was that it seemed to be setting itself up for a sequel with it’s last shot of Christ resurrected. Just imagine it “THE REVENGE OF THE CHRIST.” I’d certainly go see it if someone paid me to.

I had no religious upbringing at all in my family. The closest thing I had was burning incense on Chinese New Year, but otherwise I didn’t grow up believing in any god or gods of any sort, which is one reason I don’t feel obligated to capitalize the word. The religious pamphlets you get on the subway and various other places just irritate the piss out of me for the same reasons that there are no real answers to the practical questions for the bible. Those reasons being that ultimately most of religion is based on faith rather than proof. This is why religious groups are referred to as “faith based” now since religion has gained a negative connotation in many books.
I could go on all day with reasons that I’m irritated by religion, but I’ll stay within the confines of this strip which has a small simple reason. That reason being that the rationale for all the reasons you should take Jesus into your life are only backed up by passages in a book a bunch of guys got together and wrote a very long time ago. Kind of like writing a research paper with quotes taken completely out of context when it could turn out that had you quoted one more word your argument would fall apart.
