The way I explained this story to a friend of mine is that normally being splashed with an unidentified liquid is suspicious or worrisome as it is. But being splashed with liquid when you’re in CHINATOWN is just about worst case scenario. I was actually walking up the stairs of the exit at Grand Street when some water, not a whole lot, but enough that it was more than a spray fell down over the fench onto a couple people on the stairway. The person in front of me got hit the worst, I was on the outside of the radius, but instantly I was having paranoid reactions. When I got to the top I saw a woman with a plastic bag so I still don’t know if it was just water or something that there was Chinatown food floating in or some other unspeakable thing. I know above the Grand Street subway exit there’s a lot of food being sold so the possibilities were endless.

I know this has already been reported on by other New York blogs and such but I just wanted to add my split screen image to the mix since I love Chinatown Ice Cream Factory so much. Their almond cookie ice cream is really amazing, but then again most of their ice cream is amazing. I haven’t tried all the flavors (I don’t think I’ll ever try durian flavored) but everything I’ve had was delicious.
Then this place Nolita Ice Cream opens up with the exact same logo? What the hell? From what I’ve read it sounds like the original place was owned by two brothers and the younger brother split away and opened Nolita Ice Cream? Supposedly the ice cream is simiilar if not the exact same ice cream, but you gotta support the home team. I’m giving my support by not giving the link or information to where Nolia Ice Cream is even located, gotta find that on your own if you so wish.
Chinatown Ice Cream Factory is located at 63 Bayard street between Mott street and Elizabeth Street one block below Canal.

I took this picture a while ago when I went to Chinatown on the day of the parade. The thing is that the previous week it was Chinese New Year so I deliberately avoided Chinatown on that day, even though I had been going on weekends with some regularity to a great vegetarian dim sum place I discovered (I’m not vegetarian by any stretch of the imagination but my friend I went there with is vegan).
Then we were all set the next weekend to go to dim sum, but it turned out that that day was the crazier day where the parade happened to be solely on the street the restaurant was on. Though we ended up going to the East Village to eat instead of trying to find some place in Chinatown which would’ve been suicide.

The thing is that the only person I would ask to translate Chinese for me is my mom, but if this is like your typical graffiti I think she might be too embarrassed to tell me what it means if it’s as bad as your typical graffiti.

I got totally shafted by them this past weekend, got my $10 bills and a big hulking $50. Where the hell am I supposed to spend that? At my deli where I get breakfast? No one wants to be the dick who pulls out the huge bill when they’re buying a Snapple, except for the person who’s being a dick by buying a Snapple for $50 with no hesitation.
I’ve only used a handful of ATMs that gave $10 bills. The Citibank ones in Chinatown and I have a vague recollection that the ATM by Water Street in the financial district also gave $10. It makes more sense for Chinatown to be like that since everything on the street is $10. That’s probably not the official reason, but I’d like to think it is.
