Sonic Youth had a concert in Williamsburg yesterday. I sort of attended with some friends sitting outdoors on the grass. But since I couldn’t pick a Sonic Youth song out of a mix CD or even a crowd I left early after the opening bands and two actual songs. Plus it was kind of cold and I didn’t want to get any sicker.

I went to a free outdoor concert at Prospect Park yesterday. It was pretty good, though some of the early stuff was very Broadway musical-ish. Plus there was some opera sang in English. Opera plain shouldn’t be sung in English. They did Carmen too which was better, but most of all I was just hanging out with my friends.

I might’ve mentioned it before but it’s worth repeating that Brooklyn is the place to be in order to enjoy snow in the city. In Manhattan there’s too much foot traffic to allow snow to stay white so you have to go to Central Park or something. Brooklyn is more like enjoying snow back home for me, except that I don’t have to shovel anymore. What always kills me is the store owners out there with the big ice picking shovel tool thing that they have to resort to because people walking over the snow has really packed it down so really a shovel doesn’t cut it. Though I’ve yet to see someone with a decent shovel, everyone seems to have crappy plastic ones in New York.

I went to Prospect Park yesterday with the firm goal of finally going to the lake. I’ve been all over the northwest section of the park and I went to the zoo, but I still hadn’t seen the lake. The walk ended up being a lot longer than I had originally intended, but that meant I covered a lot more ground.
I started by walking to the bagel store to get a bagel with cream cheese and lox, then walked to the lake to eat it. Some areas around the lake were more densely populated than others with screaming kids and the like, but I got a lot of good pictures. I also saw a red winged blackbird which used to be my favorite bird in first grade. I got an okay picture, but it wasn’t as good as one I could’ve gotten had my camera been ready when it settled down three feet away from me.
A friend had told me about the paddleboats they have there which I’ll have to try out at some point with a friend, and I didn’t realize there was a skating rink there too. Actually scratch that, I had heard about the skating rink.
Walking around really made me want a bike, but I wouldn’t want to ride it anywhere else but the park. The whole walk from when I left my apartment to when I got back ended up being about two and a half hours. Which is good because then I can spend a lot of the rest of the weekend indoors without feeling I let the good weather go to a complete waste. The main reason it was so long was because I did a complete circle around the lake when I actually only mean to go from the south side to the north, woops.

This is the Brooklyn Chinatown which I went to a while ago. I wanted to take a nice wide shot to give a good idea of how what it was like, but I couldn’t find a very good angle. I should’ve taken a panorama photo. Basically it’s about ten or so blocks of Chinatown sans tourists. Otherwise they have the same outdoor markets, DVD stores and everything. Sadly there were no stores with spiffy anime merchandise.
