I think that if I was a smoker I would be the most polite smoker there was because I would want to be a “good smoker” to prove that not all smokers are jerks. I’d exhale above me and put my used cigarettes into a case a la Solid Snake in Metal Gear Solid 4.
However, the people smoking on the sidewalk the other day weren’t smokers like that, and the woman who was blowing smoke right into our path passive aggressively said this when Anna coughed slightly.

just a question: Are you honest to yourself, too? As a former smoker I too came in contact with all possible sorts of smokers – and non-smokers. The last-mentioned people sometimes are passive aggressive, too. It is yet a common joke to advice a “demonstratively coughing non-smoker” to better go to a doctor because the sound of it was so terrible. After all I guess it is a never ending struggle between smoker’s and non-smoker’s rights which at least comes to surface in such situations that you described. As I mentioned I used to smoke, too, and since two years I am “clean”. Even after such a short period I fully understand what you describe because I don’t like the smell of cold smoke and want my body to recover after all these years of smoking – without any passive-smoke, of course. Anyway, just wanted you to question yourself

I smoke on occasion but I’m never downright rude or aggressive to people. I’ll find me a spot in the back of a building where no one is to smoke. [I won't lie, I do it for myself more cuz I like the peace and quite]
I’ve been around non smokers who literally coughed so fakely when I had a cigarette in my mouth walking down the sidewalk. They coughed and covered their mouth just staring at me when they passed. I turned around and told them, it wasn’t even lit! I hadn’t lit it yet, they looked surprised, stopped coughing at walked faster lol.
HAH! Well that’s pretty ridiculous too. Much as I don’t like smoking I know that smokers get bothered enough constantly about how unhealthy it is that they don’t need me to say anything so I leave them alone in general.
