I did a comic about this before, but seriously my neighbors really do suck at recycling. Yes, all of these things were found in the barrel for glass recyclables. None of them were glass. About half the barrel was stuff that wasn’t glass. The half full container of almond butter was what killed me and also the two reusable bags. Like the near compulsive sorter that I am, I resorted them to their proper barrels. But there was so much stuff I’m sure there was still a lot more.
Wikipedia has a pretty interesting article on recycling. The part I read was about sorting. Lots of things are sorted by hand like the different colored glasses. Corrugated cardboard and plastic bags are removed so they don’t jam up the machines. And coolest of all, strong magnets are used to separate the different types of metals. Science!
