The secret is that there’s no secret. Computers might seem like logical things, but they’ve become so complicated that there’re just too many things that can go wrong with them. So tech support people have an increasing number of steps they must take when they have no idea what is going on. The tried and tested one being “Have you tried turning it off and on again?” That’s why phone tech support people have a script they stick to until they realize that you really messed something up.

That’s also why as a tech savvy person it’s so frustrating dealing with phone tech support because they can’t get it through their head that you already went through most of their script.

Yes, I was dealing with a firewire drive that wouldn’t mount. Disk Utility may have helped, but just last week I had the exact same problem and during the moment I was going to tell someone the disk wouldn’t mount, I looked at my desktop and it had mounted. Freakin’ computers.
