I was at the Vietnamese sandwich shop I like on Broome street. These two people walk in and order a couple sandwiches. They they start going through the shrink wrapped items they have around the store that I always imagine have been sitting there for days. The woman asks if one of the items is sweet or savory. I realized then that I have no idea precisely what savory means. All I could think about was George Carlin’s material on food marketing buzzwords because savory seems like one of those things you find on lots of food but no one in their right mind uses in casual conversation like “zesty” or “tangy.” Am I just totally off the mark here and people do actually use the word “savory” when they want to talk about salty food?

The other marketing terms Carlin picks on in that bit are: “fresh, natural, hearty, old fashioned, homemade, homestyle, (insert food)-flavored and gourmet. I like when he says “You know what lemon-flavored means? No f***ing lemons!! By the way dog s*** is perfectly natural too!”
