I know from talking to friends that it’s not just me who has someone in their office who spends more hours in the office than anyone else yet accomplishes a fraction of the work everyone else does. It’s only worse when they complain about having too much work to do or stand around doing nothing.

Christmas party was pretty good, though it starting so soon was kind of a mixed blessing. On one hand it meant the work day was significantly shorter. On the other hand, the eating was over so quickly that for the last four hours of the day kind of dragged. It was helped along a bit with desserts and some Beatles Rock Band on the Xbox 360 at the office but still, would’ve been nice to go home early. I had Japanese class though so I needed to stay in the city anyway.

Despite the character in my comic I consider myself a pretty positive person. Christmas parties aren’t something I’m super big on. Maybe it’s because Christmas is supposed to be the most heart-warming super positive and happy-go-lucky holidays of the year that it feels that much more artificial. I can be positive, happy and have a good time on my own, but when told that there’s a specific time for it that doesn’t really go so well. Oh well, having less than half a day of work is a good thing too I suppose.

This is for my friend C.M. who is the office’s boy who cried “OMG check out this link!” I think he knows about his reputation to a degree, but the thing is that sometimes around the office I hear him talking about more interesting links that I had seen but he chose not to send to me for some reason in favor of the ones I’m not actually interested in.

Seems kind of lame but yes I had a bad dream about being in school again in this sort of situation. Actually I think there were more classes I had forgotten about, homework I hadn’t done, packets I hadn’t read etc. Then I woke up very suddenly, had to orient myself a bit to remember that I had work not school. I think I’ve had this sort of dream before and each time I was sooooooo relieved when I realized that I just have a job now and not school. Closest thing I have is Japanese classes twice a week, but we don’t really have homework and it’s super casual and relaxed so it’s never a bother for me.

I have a very packed RSS reader with 30+ subscriptions in it. I’d say a dozen of which have lots and lots of updates during the course of a day. I use NetNewsWire for Mac OS X which has a feature that displays the number of unread articles in the dock whenever it refreshes. For the longest time it was set to refresh every half hour or so. Then I realized that it was destroying my already horrible attention span so I turned off the automatic refresh and the unread counter. Lo and behold I’ve gone entire work days without refreshing it! Not to say that I still don’t do it (and enjoy seeing the large counter of unread articles) but the temptation has been far lessened.
Despite my love of computers, all these little updated things really amount to internet junk food. Addictive and easy to swallow small bits. This is why I try to stay away from the more popular things like that now such as Facebook updates, twitter and such. I already find myself closing reddit links if the article is too long, instead enjoying the funny pictures more. I don’t want my brain to regress any more than it already has or any faster. Whether or not I’m doing a good job of that is debatable. Maybe ultimately I need a job where I don’t have a computer (yeah right). Only thing that makes me feel better is knowing kids growing up with all this technology are even worse off than me

There may or may not be a person at my office who does this habitually with no regard or inkling of how weird and awkward it is. They’re not doing it to check up and make sure we’re working, in fact I have no idea why they do it.
Also there may or may not have been a situation where the head of my department was imitating this person by standing behind another friend just watching him. Then the person he was imitating came by and did this exact thing without realizing the person next to him was making fun of him.

I spend $2.00 on my bagel with cream cheese. Back in the day (less than two years ago I think) it was $1.55. If for some reason I haven’t bought my half gallon of Tropicana orange juice from the deli in Brooklyn (it’s at least one dollar cheaper than buying in Manhattan) then I buy a small orange juice which is actually $2.25.
