It’s been over 100°F where I live in LA this past weekend and conveniently my living room a/c is broken leaving only the one in my bedroom. The problem of course is that an a/c in a separate room isn’t enough to cool the rest of the apartment. Uni and Ebi seemed pretty unaffected by the heat but I still worried about them. I assumed they’d go to where it was cooler in the apartment but for the vast majority of the time they preferred to be where I was. Awwwwww…

Also my life has gone through so many changes in such a short period of time it’s like my brain needs to catch up and realize that everything that is happening is actually happening. Just like until I owned black cats I thought it was dumb in movies when people mistake objects for other things. It always seemed trite or corny when people in movies say they feel like they’re in a dream, but I kind of get that now.
It’s been a while since there was a day I could stay indoors completely guilt free because of rain, but yesterday was one of them. I actually made some decent progress on a long term side project that I’ve been working on. Right now it involves a lot of design and Adobe Illustrator which I’m still not very comfortable with at all.
I’m slowly getting better but man, design is hard.
The difference in temperature between morning and afternoon during the Winter here is anywhere from 20-30°F. So just waiting a few hours means it’s 70 degrees outside in the Winter. I actually did exercise in the afternoon one time when I wasn’t working during the day and it was actually kind of too hot 😛
Yesterday morning the temperature was around 32°F. During the day it’s been in the 50s which isn’t really a big deal unless you live in an apartment with no central heat which I think is most apartments here. It’s supposed to be in the mid 70s next week, so this stretch of days is probably the only time I’ll have to use this for a while.
Yesterday it rained pretty hard, and not only hard but consistently! I wasn’t at home all day, but it was raining when I left home and when I got home about six hours later. I love the smell, the sound and the feel of the rain. I love when I’m driving past some trees and a bunch of drops fall on my windshield and it reminds me of the bus stop scene from “My Neighbor Totoro.”
What I don’t love is driving on the freeway in the rain. I didn’t realize until I got home just how tense I was from the experience. Nothing bad happened, but the heightened sense of danger of driving in a rain storm with decreased visibility and all that really unnerves me. And it doesn’t happen enough here for me to get used to the feeling either so it’ll probably just be like this for a good long time.
Looks like from the weather forecast it’s supposed to rain more this week. I guess the drought is canceled! Haha just kidding, three days of rain is pretty piddling compared to every other sunny day.
I haven’t been going to the park as often lately because there were a few days where it was cold enough that I knew I wouldn’t be able to get much out of stretching or to kick high. Today I went to the park and luxuriated in the crunchy leaves covering the ground. I realized that it’s been a while since I’ve had the feeling of leaves crunching under my feet. Where I was in San Diego was pretty much only palm trees and evergreens so it’s nice to see some “normal” trees.
In the morning it was about 60°F and as I type this it’s 77°F.
I pay attention to the amount of morning dew a lot because it partially determines what kind of kung fu workout I’ll have in the morning. The reason is that if it’s wetter then that means the playground I practice at will be more slippery so I won’t be able to do certain kicks at full confidence because I’ll be thinking about not falling on my butt.
I often find myself speculating about the factors that would cause more or less morning dew. Like, temperature difference from daytime to night, but then humidity is another factor that I’m less likely to be paying attention to. Especially since I just don’t check the weather unless I happen to see the temperature when I have Google Now open.
On last Saturday it had rained the day before, but my only recollection was when I was in the bathroom thinking “Huh, what’s that unfamiliar noise?” It also rained on Saturday which significantly cooled things down and resulted in the first night I’ve worn a jacket in quite a while since moving to L.A.
I think since last Saturday it’s been 100° F or over and will be through Tuesday or Wednesday. Sufficient to say that my a/c has been getting constant use and for the first time since I moved into my apartment complex I’ve actually seen people using the pool. I was pretty happy that I made it through the Summer without having to constantly blast the a/c since I heard stories about how hot it can get. But this is making me think that it’s too soon to celebrate that victory.
According to the forecast it’s going to rain today and tomorrow. I’m writing this on Wednesday so I’m looking forward to it. Also I’m well aware that I basically did this same comic last year but dammit I’m looking forward to rain!
