I don’t know if it’s a regulation or not, but all casino ads I see on TV also have a link to a hotline for if you have a gambling problem. I even saw one of those annoying lower-3rd graphic ads which had the same information. Then I got to thinking about what if other things had to advertise in the same way?

Of Gordon Ramsay’s FOX shows I find Masterchef to be the most frustrating. I think the reason is that there are three judges who are all trying to do the exact same thing. Ramsay’s experience on his other shows means that he knows exactly how to do the long drawn out fakeouts that precede the commercial break. But then they have the two other guys who are also trying to do the exact same act if not outright trying to outdo Ramsay. They give the judge’s ambiguous question like “Are you satisfied with that?” which is immediately followed by a very serious look. The intention being to just mess with the contestants and make it more fun to watch.
This just puts it over the top so every five minutes becomes that reality show suspenseful buildup and it’s just flat out annoying now. We all get it, they’re not going to say what they really thing first and they think that the audience will go “OH MY GOD!” right before they reveal that the person’s name they mentioned is actually the winner and not the loser. I also wonder about the contestants. They must’ve seen a ton of these shows, so why are they always surprised at this fakeout? Is it the pressure or is it because it’s rehearsed? Neither would surprise me, but it’s still frustrating to watch.
I used to watch FOX Gordon Ramsay shows religiously, but in the past year I’ve grown tired of their format. A friend first got me into Hell’s Kitchen because of how ridiculous and manipulative the editing is which was the first appeal. Since I’m also a foodie I liked watching it for that aspect too. But eventually I wanted more stuff about the food and less about the human dramas that they were creating for the show. So now I gravitate more towards stuff like his UK show “The F Word” which is all about the food with no drama at all.

I feel like I did this comic before (if I did, please tell me!), but I always find it funny when there are TV spots for a movie that is probably not good. You can always tell because the reviews cited on the commercials are two words long at most such that they could easily be taken out of context. Past that, they’re also usually by radio stations of some sort which apparently are the lowest rung for critic reviews of movies. If the reviews are from prestigious publications, the narrator will usually make a point of it, so it’s quite easy to spot the times when the reviews are from less prestigious sources.

I’m feeling too lazy to Google, what other cultures have ancient remedies that are still used today or had very advanced medicine during ancient times? There’s an article on ancient Egyptian medicine citing that they had a pretty decent knowledge of human anatomy. Especially since their mummification rituals required the removal of organs and also the brain via the nose (“When you hear the crunch, you’re there.”)

I always seem to start watching new sitcoms only when they’re in syndication after several years. The same thing happened to me with Scrubs which I would catch late nights before going to bed. Now “How I Met Your Mother” is something I almost never miss. I think it’s a combination of liking a lot of the actors and also the characters being roughly the same age as me. Add in some nerdy references and some really absurd and silly humor and I’m totally sold.
But no, yesterday there was a baseball game going on. I’m not sure which is a more disappointing thing to see taking up time on TV, baseball or NASCAR? I guess NASCAR since it doesn’t hold any suspense for me and I know nothing about cars. What I want to know is how different are the individual cars’ engines? Surely there aren’t many top of the line components and everyone would want to have the best gear, right?

For a long time now I’ve said that the problem with reality TV is that it lowers the bar for the point of entry to celebrity and fame. My problem now isn’t just that the bar is low, it’s that it’s SO low that the people in a good percentage of reality TV are actually even worse, less talented and dumber than the average person. So much reality TV people now watch because they know that they’re better than those people, but you can be sure that there are some people out there who are realizing that being a trashier, more vapid person is the pathway to fame and celebrity.
I can’t imagine what it’s like being an educator nowadays trying to encourage people to get a good education and go to a good college when there are a lot of people out there looking at the trashiest of the trashy on reality TV becoming rich from endorsements, TV appearances and whatnot. Wrong lesson? Yep I think so.

I do not belong to the cult of Netflix streaming yet. There’re so many TV shows that I have access to right now which I haven’t watched yet and we watch TV at such a slow rate that it’s not worth it. I’m kind of curious, but it seems that “it’s on Netflix streaming” is the phrase that comes up in every single conversation about anything that can be watched on a television set. I feel like I’m missing out whenever I hear those words uttered, and yet I know that I wouldn’t use it much if I had it.

We figured since it was this big huge crazy jackpot we’d just buy a few tickets for fun. One for each of us and one for Anna’s cat. We didn’t win of course, but it was fun to do it. Seems odd to say that it was fun to do because all it involves is going to the store and spending $3 on a slip with some numbers on it. I’m not a gambling person, but I guess the appeal is just the slight thrill of the possibility.
I feel like I know so little about money that even if I were to hire advisors I wouldn’t be able to decipher the paperwork well enough to know whether or not they were ripping me off
But it still is fun to think about what I’d do with several million dollars.
Of course, all the local news stations were talking about the mega jackpot and asking the obvious questions “what would you buy?” I think it’d be more interesting if they asked people questions like “how would you handle the money intelligently?” or ”how would it change your life?” A quick google search will give you several stories about people whose lives most definitely did not turn out for the better after winning the lottery because they made stupid decisions. It’s more interesting reading articles about that or about people who have thought it through and the suggestions they give for how to do it so that everything works out.

It was late at night and I was struggling to remember the comic idea I had earlier in the day. He-Man was on TV and fatigue got the best of me which made me choose this easy way out. Time seriously has not been kind to He-Man. Space Ghost Coast to Coast and Sealab 2021 also make it impossible to go back to any show from that era. It also doesn’t help that they look like Scooby Doo when they’re running. When I was a kid I always thought He-Man was shouting “I HAVE NO POWER!!!” It didn’t make sense to me

I very rarely stay up that late, but sometimes Anna is up really really late working on plush projects so she made the discovery that on channel 11 they play TNG. It’s fun trying to figure out which episode was playing from her descriptions. There was one night I stayed up a little bit later just to see it on TV live. It ended up being Qpid which is where the quote in the fourth panel is from. I fell asleep around 3:30.
