Okay so maybe they didn’t run onto the subway car gleefully, but they definitely said that as I was getting out of the uptown Q train at Union Square.

I think that at the Union Square NQRW stop it’s purposely designed so that the windows which tell you what train it is are the FURTHEST from the bottom of the stairs. Usually I can tell if it’s an N or a Q based on if it’s a new train or not, but not all the N trains are new and there are a few new Q trains in service now too. I’ve got on a few times not knowing if it was one or the other since if I’m wrong I can just get off at Canal st. This guy I saw though got off as quickly as he got on after running down the stairs.

I never thought of this much until my sister was visiting from out of town, but the sound the turnstile makes when it accepts the card and when it doesn’t are basically the same. The only real difference is the satisfying click sound that accompanies a successful Metrocard swipe. I guess people from out of town aren’t listening for that sound when they swipe.

I went to the Transit Museum with my sister which was a lot of fun. I think I want to go back at some point and read everything for all the sections of the exhibit. The ironic thing was how difficult it was for them to tell us what subway stop they are at. The guy on the phone kept on repeating the subway lines they were nearby and not the stations. I could’ve guessed from the lines they listed, but I wanted to be sure. Incidentally they’re near both Court St/Borough Hall and Jay St/Borough hall stations.
The coolest parts were things like all the subway turnstiles that ever existed and of course the actual subway cars. The other fun parts were the advertisements in the cars. Unfortunately not all of them had advertisements, but what was there was fun to look at. Stuff like “Buy war bonds!” and various products like Ivory soap except without any sort of logo or product picture or illustration.

I was in an H&M store which had an escalator. The escalator was basically full. There was this teenager directly in front of me on the escalator who decided it would be a good idea once he go to the top to do a nice landing like he were an Olympic gymnast. Of course, this being an escalator it doesn’t stop so of course I had to push through, except I said “excuse me” of course.
I hate when people hold up an escalator, especially at movie theaters were it could be really dangerous because you have so many people behind you so people could pile up on each other if you block the traffic.

When I go down stairs, but more especially when I go down inclines I wonder why some people are still walking so slow. You don’t have to do as much work because gravity carries you! As far as I’m concerned you’re just making more of an effort to slow yourself down than you are if you just let loose and whizz down the ramp. Maybe for stairs people can’t move their feet fast enough?

This is something of a tease because I haven’t had time to take any pictures. BUT the important news is that I received my sister’s old camera which means that next week I’ll definitely resume the photos! Right now I’m out of the state at a friend’s wedding so I apologize for another weekend of photo-less Kick in the Head. I promise they’ll resume next week.

I’m sure most people in New York had their own commuting horror story yesterday due to the weather. I woke up somewhere between 5:00 am and 6:00 am because of the crazy loud thunder. I was pretty groggy, but I remember thinking it was cool because I like thunder and it’s been a while since we had any. Also the lightning was going crazy flashing in my eyes every few seconds. A friend of mine whose apartment has a view of the World’s Fair globe in Queens said the rain was pouring so hard he couldn’t see the globe.
Anyway, I get to the subway station and I see at least six people on their cell phones, and another woman quickly hailing a cab (I’m sure she had a wonderful time stuck in traffic). Last time this happened the other nearby subway station was all right, so I walked over. Turns out not only were there at least two to three times as many people outside this station on their cell phones, but they had already taped off the station. I called a work friend who lives in Brooklyn to see what they were doing.
I then decided to go back home and read announcements, but luckily passed a couple saying the R train was still running. So I ended up walking to that station, and once I got there it was pretty normal except for the tremendous amount of water on the tracks. Plus the humidity was INSANELY GROSS. There was a guy who looked like he was caught in the rain, but just had just soaked his white shirt in sweat, eeeeeeeewwwwww. So I got to work maybe an hour late. Don’t want to sound ignorant here, but listen up MTA. This happens EVERY TIME there’s a major rainstorm, what’s the deal yo?

I really do think things like this when I’m near people handing out stuff I don’t want. There used to just be a stack or rack of free Metro Daily News papers at the entrance to my subway station, but now they hired a guy to hand them out to people.
