As far as I’m concerned there are only a few things that excuse you from walking excessively slowly through the subway. If you’re elderly, disabled, carrying heavy luggage or with a child. Other people should just walk at a regular pace bare minimum. A subway station I use frequently is sometimes populated by a very smelly individual who is down the stairs and from there at the other end of a small hallway. Long story short, you have to walk a fair amount before you make it past the smell. Yesterday there was someone walking particularly slowly in front of me making it difficult to get past with any expediency.

I’m seriously amazed that I’ve never seen people like this who don’t understand the limits of the unlimited Metrocard. I started college late 1999 so I’ve basically been here for over ten years and never seen this. I wonder how many people there are out there who thought that unlimited cards worked this way and then felt totally gypped when it didn’t.

Turns out it was just a late night service quirk and not a result of the service changes. It was funny to me though because this was pretty much my exact thought process before the F train rolled into the station.

The New York MTA has made some drastic changes to the subway in order to reduce costs. I saw a new subway map the other day and it threw me for a loop with its new color palette. That’s right, now the parks are all the color of puke instead of green. Also the formerly brown M train is now orange. That means that someday people will see brown M trains and go WHOOOOOAAAA just like whenever I saw an orange Q train. Also if I’m not mistaken there used to be a yellow K train.
A friend pointed out to me the wikipedia article on unused NYC Subway lines, check it out!.

The subway station nearby where I work is often populated by people who cannot for the life of them swipe a Metrocard. When I see a line of people three or more longer at the turnstiles, I assess their approximate Metrocard swiping ability and if I deem it insufficient I keep on walking towards the larger bank of turnstiles. Even when I end up getting to the other side at the same time as the bad Metrocard swiper I still feel justified because waiting and watching someone attempt to get through is an excruciating form of pain that I don’t feel I need ever put myself through.

I know there are reasons people would take a bike on the subway, but it still strikes me as odd most of the time.

Yep, two days after the comic about the fare hike it’s been approved. Monthly Metrocards are now $103 instead of $81, one day passes are $9.50 instead of $7.50 (I remember when they were $4) and regular fare is $2.50 instead of $2. The fare increase kicks in June, but the service cuts kick in May. It’s win-win!

Last monthly card increase was from $76 to $81 and right now they’re considering raising it to $103!!! ‘Nuff said (do people still say “’nuff said?”)

At the 34th street station by the BDFV you can take either of the four from the same platform so sometimes I’m hurrying down the escalator and the guy in front of me will suddenly slow down because they realized it wasn’t their train. This irritates me a lot so no matter what I always go down the escalator as if I’m trying to get the train that’s arriving at the platform.

I climb stairs very fast, especially after I started taking kung fu and my leg muscles got stronger. Of course I make sure I’m at the door that’s right next to the stairs, but sometimes the trains stop in a slightly different place. In ideal conditions I’m the first one of the stations, but other times like this it’s excruciating.
