At least a week or two ago I was on the subway platform in midtown when I saw a guy whose face I knew from somewhere. I knew that he was some kind of food service person but he didn’t look anything like my morning deli guys so I couldn’t put my finger on it. He didn’t look like any of my old morning deli guys either. Well I finally figured it out that he’s the guy who makes my burritos at the Mexican food place nearby my apartment. It was just disorienting to see him not only outside of the takeout place but in Manhattan instead of Brooklyn. That’s one weight off my shoulders, I was going nuts over that one for a while.

I hate hate hate it when people (even worse, GROUPS of people) stop walking when going down subway staircases. It makes me want to feign a loss of balance so that I can fall on top of them, but that would be very painful and dangerous for a number of people.

There’s a Christmas tree in the PATH train tunnel. Assuming it’s still there now, watch the left side windows and you’ll see it eventually, lights and everything. I wonder if it’s against regulations or if it was a higher up’s idea.

Actually the song was “Silent Night” but I think the really REALLY Christmas-y songs are more annoying. Actually scratch that, they’re all annoying. I think the thing is that as soon as Christmas feels like it no longer takes forever to arrive and instead sneaks up on you, the holiday spirit is mostly gone. Actually, it’s more like once you start getting lots of people presents it just becomes stress. Plus now I’m more aware of how hearing annoying Christmas music is to the people around me who don’t celebrate it. Overall, not much stuff that’s amazingly spectular about the holiday season anymore.
Presents are still nice, getting days off of work are nice, parties at work are nice and seeing family is good too. But just the environment it creates with all the decorations, music and stuff that’s hard to avoid just walking down the street just tedious and irritating. Maybe I’m just a Scrooge but lately this is how I’ve felt during the holidays. I haven’t even been in a bad mood or anything, I just realized it when I heard the guy playing “Silent Night” in the subway on his clarinet that it didn’t inspire any sort of fun holiday feelings. Plus when I was walking around Rockerfeller Center I just wanted to get away from all the ENORMOUS CROWDS of people. Bleah.

It really was 3:30 am when I saw this girl on the subway touching up her makeup. Not that I know anything about wearing makeup all the time, but I guess maybe at a certain point it just becomes a habit to retouch despite knowing that in half an hour you’ll be taking it off before you go to bed.

I was going down the stairs to the Canal Street Q subway platform when my hand on the railing encountered a liquid. Never a good thing, Canal street of all places. Moral of the story, touch as little as possible when using New York City Transit.

When I left the subway car yesterday morning I was greeted by the pea soup air typical to when it gets really hot in New York. I quickly went up the stairs in anticipation of the relief of the open air outside of the subway. I made it out and the air was EXACTLY the same as it was in the subway. There was absolutely no relief upon exit. Until I got to my office the best I could’ve hoped for was the open door of a store leaking air conditioned air. And no, I did not attempt to cool down with a friend by breathing upon each other. That’s gross.
The line of dialogue that began my thought process for this comic is from the X-Files when Scully is eating a “non-fat tofutti rice dreamsicle” to which Mulder groans and says “I bet the air in my mouth tastes better than that.” (the episode in question being “The Unnatural” which was all about baseball, love and of course, aliens).
