Thing about subways is that during the heat they’re either nice and refreshing or chambers of heat from which the hopefully air conditioned subway car is the only escape. However, if you’re unfortunate enough to get caught in the latter, there are sometimes pockets or small openings where a breeze sneaks through and are kind of okay if you stand right in the stream.

This was just me on the subway stairs at Canal street on a Saturday. Now that it’s warmer the tourists are going to Canal street and the Chinatown area in droves. I thought this was particularly obnoxious.

Rule #2 of going to the Sakura Matsuri (Cherry Blossom Festival)
Don’t take the cherry blossoms from the tree and then sprinkle them around just for your photo where the petals probably won’t end up showing up anyway. There were a lot of people you could see who took big chunks of cherry blossoms to put in their hair. The more common thing was kids and adults who would shake the branches to make the petals fall out of the tree as they were waiting for their friend to take a shot.
More to come.

Seriously, shouldn’t this sign be on a recycle bin or something? The only ones I know about in the city are at Union Square where they’re “testing them out.” Seriously though, unless you’re throwing away something like a plant or something that could possibly grow in the landfill that trash is destined for then you’re really not helping the planet. Actually scratch that, even a plant would be inside the garbage bag so it’s a moot point.

Yesterday I just missed the subway in the morning, but wasn’t worried because I usually catch the train that was coming in seven or so minutes. About twenty seven minutes passed by and that’s when people went to the guy at the booth. He said there were no trains on that side. The full platform of people groaned and I had to take a bus to another stop and ended up being more than half an hour late. This time the deli really had switched to lunch mode and put the bagels away (though I was still able to get mine).
What I wondered was when the guy in the booth found out there were no trains anymore because they were running express past. Also if he had known is there even a big loudspeaker in the subway the guy in the booth uses? I was under the impression it was some big control center place where all the announcements were made from, and that the guy in the booth’s PA system wasn’t that strong past the immediate vicinity.

It’s the sad reality of subway stations that if there is a reasonably concealed area or a small corner someone has probably peed or pooped in it. I was basically the kid in this comic and my girlfriend was the one who gets credit for the keen observation. The other thing she told me was about the I-beams in subway stations. Most of them at the bottom slant outward from the inside, but apparently at Union Square there are some which don’t, which makes them targets for urinating and pooping in. Yep.

Actually the second bin was a square plastic ones, but the other subway trash cans are just easier to draw. Man I hope that goes into the recycling at the end of the day and not the trash. Judging though by the opaque plastic bag, I’d have to guess it’s heading for a dumpster.

Most of my Winter clothing I wear for a long time unless it breaks, gets lost or I just get something better. This actually happened before my kung fu class and I was really miffed because it’s just irritating to lose stuff. Also the idea that my hat is now somewhere destined to never be picked up and probably end up getting thrown away because who wants a suspicious hat? After my class I went back to the same subway station to go home and lo and behold it was standing on this uh, black box thingy I don’t know what they’re for. I had a slight reservation because who knows how many people might’ve stepped on it or something, but mostly I was happy to have it back.

Construction and maintenance is a constant thing in New York or any major city. So I’m always freaked out when big changes happen. Though the big changes I’m referring to in this comic aren’t really all that big. It’s really just what amounts to construction related things being taken down. Suddenly hallways are wider, or the outside is a lot less claustrophobic because scaffolding has been taken down. What always bothers me is when I know something has changed but despite seeing a certain fixture for weeks (if not months) I don’t remember what is missing. But yes, at a subway station I frequent the hallway I enter into is now much wider.
