You should be happy to know the inspiration for this comic was a guy on the street writing up his cardboard sign, and not in fact a real sign I based the punchline on. I did in fact notice that this guy was writing a lot on his sign though. I wonder who are the people who bother to read these signs that look like entire paragraphs explaining everything in their life that led these people up to those moments. It’s like Chris Rock says “If a homeless person has a funny sign, he hasn’t been homeless that long. A real homeless person is too hungry to be funny.”

This happened to me on the way home about a week ago. It was 2:30 am and I was walking in my neighborhood. The street was basically empty, this guy comes up to me and says he needs help to get dinner for him and his daughter. I just kept on walking and he left me alone. Then it occurred to me right after I passed him how lame his story was. Maybe he only has the one and logic doesn’t factor into his thinking process when he’s saying it.

I’ve hear a number of different approaches and seen a wide variety of cardboard signs since I got to New York. A friend told me they saw a guy with a sign that said something to the effect of “Please help, I’m hungry. Actually I just want to buy booze.” Honesty is underrated sometimes.

This is something that happened to me and I felt really weird after it happened. It’s just natural to wish someone to have a nice day if they do that to you, but knowing that this guy was most likely sleeping in a less than comfortable place later that day I felt like wishing him a nice day could’ve been perceived as a slap in the face. Maybe I was thinking about it too much, but it was something on my mind for a little while afterwards.

I had originally intended this one to be an ongoing series of strips, but I couldn’t think of anymore after this first initial one. This seems to happen whenever I come up with an idea that I think will give me a lot of strips. This one is really true though, if a person addresses you and seems to take a very long time getting to the point they’re asking for money. I don’t even mean that they talk for you a long time, if they say “excuse me” somehow very slowly then just keep on walking. You can usually tell when someone is asking for directions as opposed to people asking for money especially if they start by saying “I’m not asking for money.”
