I wouldn’t have done this comic if it wasn’t true because it’s such an obvious gag. But there really was a guy directly next to the door of Warehouse Wines and Spirits on Broadway around Astor Place.

We were walking home from Minca and there was a hipster couple in some obscure street who asked us for spare change. When we passed them she said “SCREW YOU!” I don’t understand these people.

I’ve only seen one pair of hipsters doing this, but this photo I saw on flickr is a good example. If you live in NYC you probably see these hipster panhandlers in Union Square who have nothing better to do when they’re not in Williamsburg coffee shops with their MacBook laptops. There was a great “King of the Hill” episode about this phenomenon. I wonder who the heck is stupid enough to give these people money? I guess tourists who don’t know better?

This sign was sooooooo two years ago, at LEAST. I’ve seen too many of these signs recently and I wonder where the current sign holders first got the idea from. I don’t think real homeless people go around looking for the best signs to have to panhandle with because like Chris Rock says in his song, a real homeless person is too hungry to be funny. I wonder if the people I see with this sign now saw it on the internet and then decided to use it after that. Weird to think that homeless person signs could be like internet me

Usually when people aren’t eating when they ask people coming out of the turnstile for a metrocard swipe. Seriously, makes a much better case if you’re not talking with your mouth full of Cheetos. This guy didn’t make a very convincing case.

I was walking in midtown to the subway when I passed a mother telling this to her child. When I entered the station I saw the guy who looks like he has lots of black makeup on and his clothing looks like it’s made up of cut up newspapers billowing from every inch of his body. I’m sure it must’ve taken a while to make it, he even has a hat or something too. Wish I had a picture of him, but if you’ve lived in New York for a while you probably know who I’m talking about.

I was walking down the stairs from my kung fu school (fifth floor of the building) and between the third and second floors this kid who must’ve been around 16 looks kind of out of breath. He says “Excuse me” so I listen to him. Then he asks me for a dollar. Actually it was more like “spareadollargivemesomehelp?” I said “Sorry” and kept on walking down the stairs. This begged the question, was he going to go to the top of the building hoping to bump into other people and asking them for a dollar? (eventually reaching my kung fu school) Aren’t there more efficient places to be and ways of asking people for money?

I like measuring items in terms of other cheaper things. Like if I hear about some insane designer clothing item worth thousands of dollars I’ll say “That’s like four Playstation 3s!!!” The five dumplings for one dollar place(s) in Chinatown have completely changed my perception of the value of a dollar since I first went there. I often cite that place as the place I’ll eat at often if I were ever homeless. Hence, I have no sympathy for homeless people smoking $8/pack cigarettes who say they’re hungry.

I was on the subway and this woman was looking at me funny, eventually she pointed out that my chapstick dropped onto the seat next to me. Great story I know, but as soon as it happened I just tried to imagine how the character might treat a person on the street who starts to talk to him.
