Fortunately the paint was dry by the time I got home. I was in my building’s elevator and usually as soon as the door starts opening I start pushing the elevator door open. I did that like usual, but after I was already pushing the door I looked up to see the sign that said the apartment doors had been repainted. Had it said the elevator door was repainted then my night would’ve been less fun.

Turns out closing windows doesn’t drown out the sound of playing kids that much. I also blame the fact that I still have my a/c in the window, but it still felt funny to close all the windows and notice no change in sound level.

If I’m not mistaken today is the first day of school. My new apartment is right next door to a middle school which means at 8:00 AM I hear kids playing basketball outside my building and yes, one kid seems to enjoy constantly yelling “OH MY GOD!!!” I have no idea what the hell could be so exciting that he keeps doing it, but I’ve reached the point where I recognize his voice no matter what he’s yelling out. After the first initial shift of kids then some more show up close to 9:00 AM or so. The other thing I get to hear is the very intimidating sounding teacher who does the countdown before the kids have to be indoors. Well, until next Summer or until it’s too cold to play basketball I guess I have a third alarm clock. Except this one I have to for it to turn off on its own.

This past weekend I was in Boston visiting my family, seeing my sister’s second baby and playing a lot with her first. The thing about being in a house which has a 2 year old is that you wake up EARLY. Okay, for a lot of people it’s not really early, but part of their normal routine. But for me, 6 AM is two or so hours earlier than I wake up every day. It’s funny because when you’re with a 2-year old you sort of end up on their schedule including the nap in the middle of the day.
Anyway, when I got home I was up for a while but ended up crashing pretty early and waking up at 6 AM without an alarm. I went back to sleep, but when I was still okay at 7 I decided I might as well get up. Plus I hadn’t done my comic the night before so I needed the extra time.

Well, if you have leftover champagne.
I resolve to get an apartment better than my current apartment. Not too hard considering it’s an apartment where it looks like there’re six layers of paint on the walls (to the point my bathroom door and medicine cabinet don’t close), I have a tiny college dorm looking fridge, kitchen with shelves with no cupboard doors, shoddy counter and floors that creak when a cat walks over them. Washer and dryer in the basement though.

There are a few things you can count on during Christmas: Chinese food, movies, and bootleg merchandise sellers in Chinatown (the knishes I’m just conjecturing about). Not sure I’ll be doing any of these but they are all viable options. Maybe the Chinese food.

If you read my comic regularly you know that I’m pretty laid back, and never like stressing about things. One thing I believe wholeheartedly about not stressing out about is vacation time. Seems like a no brainer, but I’ve known people who sometimes just need to sit home and play video games instead of making grand plans for the weekend. It’s just like #9 on the Stuff White People Like blog. Today most likely I’ll be sticking around at home or maybe going and getting some good food. Or both.

Yes, I have my morning alarm set to NPR and if I’m lucky I retain most of what I hear, though it is always in a half state of consciousness. The most frustrating thing though is that at 8:00 AM “The Takeaway” starts and they’re always giving the phone number to call in, but because of when I leave for work I never hear any of the phone calls. It’s possible it doesn’t exist at all, but I wouldn’t know unless I actively seek out to listen to the show.

Yeah, I’m either relaxing at home right now or at the beach. Or maybe I’m relaxing after having gone to the beach.
