I get kind of like this when it’s warm enough outside that rain without an umbrella is sort of refreshing. Doubly so if I’m wearing contact lenses because the rain is a real pain when your glasses are getting water all over them, then they start fogging up and all that. But wearing contacts, warm weather, waterproof boots it’s not so bad. Subway air conditioning, not so much.

You can bet that as soon as this rain is over there’s going to be a guy on my roof fixing this. It’s not so terribly bad but leaking ceilings are never a good thing. As I write this the rain has petered off and my ceiling doesn’t look like a whole bunch of bulging paint. Though my weather widget tells me that this rain is supposed to go on through Tuesday so it’s not over yet.

And to think that if the office I worked in didn’t have windows I wouldn’t have know that it snowed yesterday at all because by the time I got out it was drizzling and the sidewalks were all wet. I think the phrase of this Winter is “You know I don’t know if global warming exists BUT…” Then you’d follow up the sentence with something like “It’s 50 degrees on New Years” or “I just went jogging yesterday without a shirt.”

If you’re anything like me you lose your umbrella all the time. I leave them in all manner of places like restaurants, bars, movie theaters and whatnot. This is actually the second time I’ve had my umbrella get messed up beyond repair. The thing about the giant umbrellas that are capable of covering at least three people is that once it’s turned inside out it’s not coming back. The small crappy $3 umbrellas are fine if they turn inside out because the metal rods going through the cloth are segmented. Whereas the enormous ones are single pieces and if it manages to turn inside out that also means that the cloth has been torn away from most of where it was attached.
This particular umbrella I already wanted to replace, because the little plastic nubs that attached the ends of the metal pieces had almost all gradually fallen off. Thus leaving my umbrella already susceptible to the wind even moreso. So I tossed the umbrella and roughed it out for the rest of my night. I had my boots on so everything else was fine. I just hate it when my feet/socks get wet and then walking around in them all day makes them smell positively disgusting and I usually end up throwing the socks away after that.
I want to get one of those wind resistant umbrellas, but like I said, I constantly lose mine.

The only part about this comic I know is true is my own feelings, and the fact that barely ever do you see people on the street asking for change during the rain. Anyone who’s been in a city for a while is probably pretty good at ignoring people asking for change if they so choose. I’m no exception, but that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t rather they weren’t there at all. That includes the ones who have a good attitude. I actually don’t think there would be someone who would try to get change during a rainstorm because I would imagine homeless people would do their best to not get sick because they did something stupid.

My umbrella is doing just fine. Umbrellas can’t just get stripped like this from the wind, someone actually took the cloth off of this one, but why would they go to that amount of effort while in the pouring rain?

I should’ve left a couple windows open in my apartment in order to facilitate some actual air circulation, because when I got home it was even stuffier than the Canal Street Q subway station. Though turning on my a/c’s fan plus directing my other fan out the window seemed to create some nice airflow. It always sucks when outdoors it’s really nice and cool but it seems impossible to get your apartment in sync with that. Bleah.

I basically lose a pair of socks every time I’m caught in rain when I’m wearing sneakers. This was the case for yesterday even though I only got in the rain on my way to Japanese class when I left work. But it was enough that by the time I got home around 12:30 am the wet parts of my socks were discolored and generally gross. There were times in the past when I let them dry out, but at that point the smell was so overpoweringly terrible and crusted onto the sock that it was not worth keeping so I chucked them. When my feet get wet in rain storms I always picture bacteria in my shoes partying it up and having a great time. Pretty gross if you really think about it. I would’ve worn boots had I known the extent to which it might rain.

Rainy days can suck enough as it is without this happening to you. I’ve seen this happen to a few unfortunate people and it’s never not funny. The most recent time I saw it was on the street there was a couple, the guy had a large umbrella and when he hit the button when coming out of a store it went straight onto the sidewalk, such that the woman retrieved the top portion to give to the guy.
