Covert Cold Medicine

I knew that Sudafed was known as the medicine that contains the chemical required to make crystal meth, which is why they moved it behind the counter at pharmacies. Apparently a lot of other medicines have joined it. I was looking for Tylenol Cold & Sinus because I’ve used it before and remembered it working well. But I couldn’t find it so I settled for Advil Cold & Sinus. In order to buy it I had to go the pharmacy desk, sign my name on a pad that probably said something like “I won’t make crystal meth with this”, paid my money and left.

Still, this is precisely what I was thinking every step of the way.

Buy One Get One You Don’t Need

When we went to PAX last year Anna needed to buy some moisturizer so we went to a Walgreens. The one she picked was buy 1 get 1 free but seeing as we were on vacation we didn’t really feel the need to take this person up on her offer of the extra free moisturizer. This seemed to throw her for a loop as she insisted because only crazy people would turn away something free. It ended up being a good choice because the moisturizer was kind of crappy and too oily.

Regular vs Maximum Strength

If I were a Math teacher and a student asked me why is Math important to learn, I’d use this as one of my examples.

Whenever I buy medicine now I think of Seinfeld because of the scene where him and George are comparing ingredients in two different medicines. We did this when buying medicine, do you know what kind it was from the ingredients?

Other Seinfeld bit he has is something like “Strength is out, everything has to be MAXIMUM strength! ‘Give the maximum strength! Give me the maximum possible dosage. Find out what will kill me and then back it off a little.”

Oftentimes a cashier will put change on the counter instead of in my hand and I wonder why. The germaphobia element is the one explanation I usually come up with, because otherwise it just makes everything take longer as I struggle to pick the change up. I’m not a germaphobe so the only real way I’d do something like this is if it were blatantly evident the person was really sick.

New Fragrance of Shampoo

I think I’m a pretty typical guy in that I don’t care too much about my bath products. Once I find something that works I just stick to it and don’t deviate from the formula. Maybe other guys are more diligent than me, I wouldn’t really know. My shampoo really hasn’t changed in a very long time. There was one I used to use which had a pretty good smell but my skin would break out occasionally. I finally settled on one that didn’t do this and the smell was pretty good. The new bottle says that it’s a new fragrance, but truth be told I can barely tell the difference.

I just did this comic because I think it would be stupid for a company to suddenly change the smell of one particular kind of shampoo that they sell. Sure you can add all the different varieties with different smells but don’t mess with something after it’s been the same for so long.

I usually go for the classic or plain deodorants, but I was noticing one day how the adjectives used for them are the exact same ones as for chewing gum. It’d be interesting to make a quiz to see if people can guess which is which.

Behind the Counter Baby Formula

This really puzzled me when I saw it at a Duane Reade. I can understand the razor blades and small expensive things being kept behind the counter but baby formula didn’t fit into that category when I first saw this. After I wrote this comic I got a few emails from people telling me that baby formula is actually really expensive. One person even said that it’s sold on the black market??? Weird.

Food ingredients perplex me when they end with “natural flavors” or something else that sounds very vague. The funniest thing about the shampoo ingredients is that any names when it comes to fragrance ingredients are more likely to be understood by the average person, yet they keep that vague and list the super ultra technical names for the rest of the ingredients.

I like the GLOOP sound effect in addition to the idea of someone shoving an entire ice cream cone into their mouth at once. I’ve never had a severe ice cream headache before. In fact I don’t recall ever getting an ice cream headache, because I thought it was a totally made up thing the first time I heard it.

Freedom of choice is a blessing in disguise, especially in a drug store. I feel bad knowing that I pick shampoos based off of what I’ve heard from advertisements. I have friends who always go with the cheaper generic brands because they have the same ingredients as the more expensive name brands. Though my choices for shampoo now are based off of smell. I have kind of coarse hair, but I never take into consideration of how oily it is or whether or not the shampoo is too harsh or something like that. I thought this strip was funny because he has such horrible looking hair.

I hate drawing shelves because that means that I have to put lots of stuff on them so it looks like he’s at an actual store. Shampoo bottles come in all different sizes, and what I came out with just looks really weird. I think the easiest shelves for me to draw are for toilet paper and paper towels because they’re all the same shape. I can just draw two rows of paper towels and then add another line for the row of toilet paper.
