For some reason I decided to let him go to Otakon this year. I think part of it has to do with the fact I don’t have any photos stored up for the weekend, so I was going to post pictures around the convention center.
I knew I wanted this strip to be about the bus I’m taking to Otakon this year (NYU’s anime club), but I wasn’t sure what angle to take. I seriously doubt anyone dedicated enough to take a bus full of anime nerds instead of Greyhound would answer “Pokemon” as their favorite anime. But you can’t do strictly reality, so I thought I’d just insert an annoying anime fan. I just like the idea of being so exclusive that you’d have to pass some sort of test to get on the bus. Very elitist of me.

This is just a strip for me and my college friends because this is the god forsaken dorm we got stuck with our Sophomore year. There are several hijinks that are associated with this dorm including accidentally driving over the brooklyn bridge on our way to registration and making a crazy U-Turn of doom. Really nice rooms, but no ceiling lights of any kind. Lots of space, but nothing is open in the financial district past 7:00pm which really sucks.
That is, except for the Chinese food restaurant on the corner of the building we referred to as C.L.A.E. (Crazy Lucky Asian Eatery). Though it turns out one of my high school friends who I had no idea was at NYU at the time had a room in the building that could see straight into the kitchen, I don’t think I wanted to see that place. The kitchen was connected to the front by a dumbwaiter, I always imagined that the chef lived on the floor of that restaurant.

This strip is dedicated to all the film school graduates out there who feel like they’re a failure, because they don’t have a job “in the industry.” Just a little reminder that you are not alone in thinking that.
This is actually a true story that happened to a friend of mine from film school. This friend has had some paying film production jobs since graduation, but has his job at a video store to support himself when he doesn’t have those kinds of jobs. He was at a bar where he bumped into two people he knew from film school, both of which were working at the bar. The three of them shared a moment of relief in knowing that they were all in the same boat over at least a year since graduation.

I don’t open my NYU alumni mail because it’s never anything interesting. Actually, it’s more like, I don’t receive NYU alumni mail. The last address they had was my home address in Massachusetts, but since that house has been sold and no one in my family lives there anymore I’m free of mail nagging for donations. I used to have a friend who worked around the IT department of NYU who told me that if I wanted they could make it so that I don’t receive anymore NYU mail. I said that maybe to be cautious I shouldn’t do it. To which he sarcastically replied “Yeah, ’cause I’m sure one day they’re going to be sending you a big fat check in the mail that you wouldn’t want to miss.” I couldn’t argue, but I didn’t have him change my info.

This is half true because I never went to the big huge ginormous NYU graduation that takes place in the park. It’s a tradition to jump into the fountain afterwards if it’s warm enough and you’re crazy. I’ve done that once before during a particularly scorching day my freshman year of college. The things I remember were running and running, WATER then I emerged. Aside from the wet underwear it was very refreshing.
If this were a rendition of my actual graduation, the people going “YAY” would be the drama students and the main character would be the film students. It’s hilarious the contrast between the two. The drama professor goes up like a football coach working them up, and they were louder than all the other Tisch students combined. Gag, these are the people who probably thought high school was one of the best times of their life.
The other thing in here that’s true is the graduation robes aren’t safe to get wet which was very considerately written in TINY print on the bag they came in. I didn’t discover this by getting mine wet, but rather I heard stories about at time at the graduation in the park when it started raining and people discovered later the nice clothes they wore were now covered in bits of purple. If this is the case then why did we pay so much god damn money to RENT them? If they’re so crappy to begin with then what are they going to do? Wash them? I never returned mine and as far as I know was never fined.

During my graduation I don’t ever remember being asked for my ID, but the fact they put it in the instructions is just so ludicrous to me. This isn’t an SAT test where you could be getting a friend to take it for you, it’s graduation.

Somehow I received financial aid without even knowing it. It wasn’t a tremendous amount but it was very confusing when I got this letter. I didn’t remember ever getting any notification or filling out forms so I went to the office at NYU and waited around for an hour just so that they could tell me that they’d look into it. Weeks later I went back to make sure there were still looking and didn’t get much of a response. If those people had been on top of it as the department asking for money to paid back maybe it would’ve worked out better. We ended up paying them back because they kept on bothering us. Grrr.
Look at this, I was so lazy I couldn’t even draw the rest of his body. I don’t know why I decided for his laughing to be hand drawn here. I guess I just did it while drawing and forgot to replace it?

I graduated from NYU early 2003 when the economy really sucked. Plus I was a film student so it was doubly crappy. NYU Film school doesn’t encourage internships as much as they should which is probably why I didn’t have one until my senior year. I also loathed the events they have when alumni of NYU come and talk about how they got started.
The reason being that when they tell their stories they always have a section where they say “I did odd jobs for a few months.” The problem is that those few months they gloss over is the section most immediately relevant to people graduating. I hate it when they tell you to be an unpaid production assistant for a while in order to network and meet the right people. The inevitable question after that becomes what do you do for rent if you can’t mooch off your parents?
I had T-shirt ideas for my comic early on and a lot of them were related to not having a job, but those ideas were only relevant to that period of time, so I’m glad I never had the time to completely develop them.
