I’m going to be out of town for the New Year. I wish there really was a statistic on what percentage of the people in Times Square during the New Year are tourists vs people who actually live in New York.

I haven’t thought too deeply about what I’m going to the glue on my tear away calendar but you can bet that it’s going to be well documented. I’m just afraid it’s going to be terribly unsatisfying. Or maybe I’ll try to rip it apart and then it won’t rip so I’ll end up having to use scissors or something. Less than four weeks left.

It’s true, my Sudoku tear away calendar still retains every bit of the connecting glue which at this point is an inch wide. The question I have is what to do once December 31st rolls around? Do I just go nuts and tear it to tiny shreds? Do I break up the portions and find different ways of dismantling it with different pairs of scissors or something? Well, that’s still four months away, but each day it gets more difficult to resist the temptation to rip it off. I have a drawer full of the undone Sudokus because the desire has faded since I received the calendar and even then it was on the wane.

I gain satisfaction and pleasure from many little things in life. One of them is ripping the glue off of tear away calendars when there have been enough pages removed (that’s the calendar I got for Christmas). A sample of other ones include: typing, the film case to a roll of TMAX film has a very satisfying feel to it when you close it, feeling the smoothness of my keyboard rest (always left to right), and peeling that boogery glue that’s used to put inserts into magazines.
I’ve always wanted to have a tear away calendar where I didn’t rip off the glue until the entire thing was ripped, and I’ve never ever done it. I’ve never seen anyone do it, but I’ve always wanted to. I’m going to do my best to make sure this is the year I finally do it so I can get the satisfaction of ripping off that enormous piece of glue all at once. Damn straight.

Allow me this year to again express my distaste for New Years resolutions. I think that most of the people that I know share a similar sentiment to me. When I think back on the year I realize that there have already been numerous changes that I’ve made in my lifestyle and that’s fulfilling enough for me that I don’t need to take this arbitrary date to decide to make anymore. Changes are made not because of what day it is, they’re made because they either need to be or you find the resolve within yourself to do it when you deem necessary.

Text for this comic I got from this blog I was pointed to recently. Honestly, it doesn’t actually matter to me if the tourist population of Times Square is kept to a minimum during New Year’s because I’m not going to be anywhere near there. In fact, I think the general rule is that no self respecting New Yorker is in Times Square during New Years even if it’s not 10 degrees outside. I think usually plans for New Year’s are either entirely laid back with friends at an apartment or going all out craziness to bars where you have no choice but to make friends with all your neighbors as you’re packing into bars and clubs like sardines. My preference is for the former.
Funniest thing about my New Year’s last year is that my friend’s TiVo was set to record South Park at midnight so the channel changed right before the countdown finished.

I’ve don’t believe in New Years resolutions. I don’t know precisely when I stopped believing in them, but if I were to venture a guess I’d say it was around when teachers stopped asking us what our resolution would be. So it could be that I haven’t really had one since elementary school. It’s very arbitrary to choose this one day to decide to start some kind of initiative to somehow change your life for the better, because that in itself is procrastinating.
As we know, that’s the primary reason that people don’t ever follow up on their resolutions beyond the first initial day or week that they proclaim it. I might believe a person more if they made a big decision by themselves without some special day to do it. To me that would indicate they had throught it through rather than forcing themselves to come up with something on the big day.
Note: I know that not everyone checks out my comic on the weekends so if you’re suddenly surprised by the new layout, Kick in the Head 2.0 went online at the beginning of the new year, and the full explanation can be read here.

Whoo! Kick in the Head 2.0 is officially online! I’ve been slaving over this website for ages now coding night and day. Okay, that’s a lie. I redesigned the site months ago and have been sitting on it lazily while occasionally searching the web for php scripts that people with webcomics will share so that I don’t have to do that hard work by myself. Fortunately I found the Walrus PHP code and a calendar script shared by David Buist so that I don’t have to bother a programmer friend or spend weeks learning php. The last things holding me back were just general laziness because I had written up the FAQ and About pages, but didn’t get around to making the pages until before Christmas. Hopefully it looks good on your computer, I don’t have a PC for testing.
Now it’s much easier for me to update and most importantly I have this handy dandy little news box, yay! Which means I can share stories about the strips since there are things I want to say sometimes that I just can’t do in the comic. I’m slowly going to work on writing little rants for every comic in the archive so check back periodically. I’ve also ditched “Comic Sans” because there’s a huge movement of people who positively loathe that font and I totally understand.
I hope you enjoy the new website, I think it’ll be more friendly to those of you who run your computer at lower resolution. Check out the “About” and “FAQ” pages and you might learn something you were curious about. I also put a link to my Livejournal in the “Contact” section if that’s your thing. I don’t have links to any webcomics because the ones I read regularly get thousands of hits a day I’m guessing. So instead I have links to friends’ websites and other amusing pages. Before I go I have to give a special thanks to my friend Mark who made it possible for my website to use both jpgs and gifs (Walrus PHP is built to only allow one filetype). Also thanks to David who added in some extra code so I could change the formatting of the calendar archive.
Please write in with your comments and feedback on the new site!
Happy New Year!
