This one is for the local New Yorkers, though even then some of them still might not get it. I’m a ticket stub collector, not that I go far and wide and try to get all varieties of stubs, I just save my movie ticket stubs. I haven’t filed them away in my album for a long time and truth be told, the old ones you can barely read the ink anymore but I still do it just the same. That is however, except for the tickets from Landmark’s Sunshine theater on Houston street. Why is this? Because somewhere a while ago they decided they didn’t want to fit into the whole “ticket stub” thing and instead they give printed receipts like you’d get at a supermarket. Sometimes they rip it in half and the even more genius validation method they used was they gave the ticket taker a ball point pen which they used to punch a hole in the piece of paper with. They’ve been doing it for a while maybe it’s cheaper for them, but it still strikes me as kind of silly.

Since I’m a movie nerd, and have usually been informed about a movie I want to see at least a couple months in advance, the thought of going to the movies without knowing what I’m seeing is UNTHINKABLE. I don’t want to spend over $10 on something that I’m just going to see on a whim. Yet, so many times I go to the movie theater and I hear couples debating what to see because they clearly just decided they wanted to see a movie but have no idea what to go see. This is one reason why crappy movies get box office. Some person goes to the movie and knows nothing except maybe “Oh, Vince Vaughn is in this, I liked him in ‘Old School’ so maybe this will be good too!” The other reason being that the wide masses simply have no taste.

This is the thing that happened to me when I went to see Mission: Impossible 3 this past weekend. The guy text messaging two rows down dwas annoying enough, but the annoyance the guy to my right provided was more like Chinese Water Torture. Sort of slower and more insidious in some ways. His deal was that his phone was set to silent, but instead of ringing it had a little green light that would blink every couple seconds or so. I tried to block it from my view, but it just kept on going. I think the person called twice and that’s why the guy picked up. But I was able to see that it was indeed an unknown caller. He didn’t end up talking to them. I don’t know why, whether or not it was a wrong number or they cut off or what. At least it didn’t ring anymore after that. When the hell are movie theaters going to implement that cell phone blocking technology?

I ended up seeing Mission: Impossible 3 last night with some friends, but I had to work a few hours overtime before I headed up to the theater. When I was eating dinner with my co-workers I was telling them my theory about how the jerks who talk during movies will be at bars and not at the movies. They brought up the counterpoint I hadn’t considered which is maybe I’ll just end up in a theater full of drunk people. I was very worried, because while I was waiting for my friends in the lobby there were some extremely loud and very drunk people. The audience overall turned out to be pretty good overall.
One cell phone rang which was annoying, and there was a guy two rows down text messaging at one point during the movie. I tried to block the offending light from my peripheral vision with little success. Plus there was a guy next to me who had his ringer on silent, but what this meant was that I had this little green blinking light in my peripheral vision that was also really anoying, probably even worse than the text messager. I’m going to do a comic later about the other thing that irritated me during this screening so you’ll have to find out later.
Plus there was this hispanic guy who was being unreasonably stubborn about getting a seat next to his girlfriend. His girlfriend took the seat at the far left of a row, and basically this guy saw that there was an empty seat that was definitely closer to the right side of the theater. So he wanted the MAJORITY of the row to move to the RIGHT so he could get a seat on the far left. And while he was arguing with the row, and the usher his girlfriend is sitting eating her popcorn as if nothing is happening. At one point he went to the far right, and apparentlly CALLED his girlfriend who was still on the left side. He finally got a seat, and some people in the audience applauded this guy finally sitting his butt down. I hate when people like that are allowed any sort of satisfaction.
The movie was pretty fun, arguably the best of the three I’d say. The first was cool, but really so ridiculously convoluted that it was just ridiculous. The second was terrible terrible terrible. First of all, Chow Yun-Fat should hold a monopoly on John Woo doves. I mean, in Face/Off there were doves, but I wouldn’t say they were used to enhance any one character. Tom Cruise however gets to walk by a flaming door that a dove flies through and whatever. The movie was just bad, the villain was lame as were his motives. Trailer was better for the second one.
This one was kind of ridiculous in that every time you changed locations you knew something pretty was going to blow up. Or you’d see a wide shot of a large setting and know that it wasn’t going to survive the scene. But still, the heist, completely impossible to break in places sort of setups were cool, there were some fun stunts and shots. The camera shakiness got kind of irritating, but it was okay. Philip Seymour Hoffman was a nice villain, even if he was barely in the film. The sound was really loud, but it was a good fluffy summer popcorn flick.

This was the situation when I went to see Inside Man last Saturday. There was this big loud guy behind myself and my friend. It’s not clear in this comic but the women who were sitting on either side of him were his friends, but it was still annoying. The comment about heaven being akin to a movie, popcorn, diet coke, two female friends is verbatim though. My friend and I briefly considered moving, and then moved. At first we were thinking that we’d wait until the previews started to gauge his reaction but instead we chose to move to the side of the theater, and we’re convinced we made the right decision.
I don’t know if he was talking during the movie. He made some loud comment during the Flight 93 trailer. The most obnoxious thing though was when the usher asked his row to move INWARD one seat so that a couple could sit together. The guy GLARED at the usher and refused to move. Eventually he begrudgingly moved. I’ll never know how people like that make it through life. I figure they’re just so ignorant of their surroundings that they don’t understand the grief they spread.

If only reality could be like this. I swear, I am THIS close to just getting a huge TV and never going to the theater again. But sadly I don’t entirely mean it because I still enjoy seeing films on a big screen. I went to see Brokeback Mountain last night and this comic represents a sampling of what I had to go through. Behind me were three girls giving running commentary during the entire movie. I did the head turning, the eye rolling and I think I even made eye contact one time to no avail.
It wasn’t even the typical heckling sort of person because I could tell they did actually really want to see the movie and sounded genuinely interested. It’s just that everything was stupid inane sort of talk like “Did you understand that?” “Heh, I stopped trying like an hour ago.” WTF??? I wish those seat ejectors in that Cingular ad actually existed. To my right I heard someone’s phone vibrating two times during the movie. Plus there was this beeping noise that didn’t quite sound like a cell phone, it sounded vaguely fire alarm-ish. Like maybe if a fire alarm was running out of batteries.
Then there was this guy to my right who halfway through the film unzipped his shoulder bag to get this piece of cake he had in some plastic deli container that he proceeded to eat with his fork. He seemed to enjoy it as evidenced by his breathing. The container was put back into his bag with a loud ZIP, no attempt made at all to be quiet. He also had a few moments of “Oh my god…” and during one sentence that didn’t seem to make much sense he had a very confused “WHAT?” He chatted a bit with his friend too.
Lastly there was this couple in front of me. The guy on the left was a heavy guy so he was leaning back so hard the seat was digging into my friend’s legs. His wife or girlfriend seemed to be either just dumb, had bad vision or a slow reader (Think Milhouse from Simpsons reading the silent film card “A chance for more mis-”). Because whenever something on screen needed to be read she instantly leaned towards him as he read it to her. Sometimes he’d put in his two cents if something seemed a little confusing “Oh, that’s what he’s thinking.”
Other thing was a more general audience vibe which I think would be unavoidable in any theater with an appreciable crowd. That being we all went into this movie knowing it’s about two cowboys who fall in love. Because of this knowledge people are looking for the first signs of the gay scenes or maybe innuendos when really they should just be digesting the film as it’s presented to them. People looking to pick up on innuendo or dialogues they think are funny just end up laughing or giggling at dialogues and scenes that aren’t meant to be funny at all but should be taken at face value. People can be so god damn immature.
Aside from that the movie was good.
I’d want to see it again without the running commentary. Like, maybe when I’m rich enough to buy out an entire theater. I did have a problem with Heath Ledger’s character’s speech patterns in that he mumbled almost everything. The character is supposed to be a man of few words but sometimes it was just indecipherable. The performances were good all around, I thought Jake Gyllenhaal might’ve been a bit too much at times, but that could just have been what his character was like. I thought the love story was very well done. I liked the understatement of things and how they slowly developed over time. There wasn’t that much dialogue in the beginning (except for the fargin’ girls behind me), but it wasn’t entirely necessary for the relationship to develop.
The main theme was also very good. One of those themes that when it kicks in it just works great. It’s actually the music in the beginning of the trailer for the film. Cinematography was also very good with some great wide expansive shots. In the beginning there are some really great cloudy sky shots.
I’d say this one is recommended, though not absolutely essential to see on the big screen.

Let me just tell the world right now that if my ever mentioning that I’m running out of ideas was interpreted as a cry for more ideas, it wasn’t. I went to see King Kong last night with a friend. As soon as we got in I took a trip to the bathroom and by the time I got back the theater was basically full. If it wasn’t we would’ve moved because of the guy behind us with HORRIBLE B.O!!! Dear god, it was that sort of B.O. that you think you can avoid by breathing through your mouth but then you realize you feel your mucus melting.
My friend was a little more fortunate than me because he’s been sick, but he still bought popcorn so he could keep his nose in it during the movie. He must’ve gained a number of calories just smelling it during the movie. I resorted to keeping my nose under my shirt most of the time, though even if it was only protected by the very top of my shirt I could still smell it. Plus this guy decided that yawns, grunts and moans need be verbalized instead of simply done. Seriously, it’s perfectly easy to yawn or make any fatigued bodily movements without the benefit of sound. Seriously!!!
The movie was really amazing though so the experience wasn’t completely ruined. Truth be told, when I go to the movies I want to be completely absorbed by the movie. Being required to think about what way I should be breathing during the movie qualifies as me not being completely absorbed. I need to see it again for a number of reasons. First being I want a bigger theater, second I want to have a non-B.O. laden experience and third the movie deserves being seen again in the theater in my opinion.
The time taken to develop the characters helped a lot because it made you care what happened to most of them. The real highlight of the film though is obviously the relationship between Kong and Anne which is surprisingly affecting and utterly believable. Kudos goes both to the Kong team and Naomi Watts for developing the relationship in a logical sort of way and conveying it with virtually no dialogue. There’s a surprising amount of subtlety in how they get along in terms of the knowing looks they exchange as they get to know each other and survive various perils.
I didn’t cry like I hear some people have been at the end of the movie but Naomi Watts almost made my cave during a few choice scenes. This attention to detail and characters is what really makes the film successful. I was rather surprised by just how much I cared about them because I thought the emotional connection to such an ill-fated couple could only go so far. I’m glad to say that I was wrong.
There can be nit-picking done about the visual effects because they’re not perfect but they’re well used. The brontosaurus stampede scene has some iffy compositing and the raptors look far more CG than everything else. Throughout there’s some questionable lighting whenever people are interacting with CG characters but the story is involving enough that it’s never truly distracting. Plus sometimes in hair I could see tinges of blue from the bluescreen, but whatever. Though any loose ends or cracks in the VFX will show up that much more on the DVD unless they’re tweaked between now and then.
In the end though it’s a very good movie and I’m really happy for Peter Jackson’s achievement in light of how this has been his dream since he was a little kid.

There’s no significance to him going to see Syriana, it’s just the movie that I saw last night when I had this popcorn thing happen to me. I went to see the movie at the Angelika and the difference between their small popcorn and their medium is rather pronounced, at least proportionally if you compare the medium to the large. It’s similar to how they ridicule you in some movie theaters by calling the small the “child size.”
I just hate it when you get people who try to sell you the larger size or something with more add-ons. They do this at fast food places too like how Wendy’s Biggie size is only thirty-nine cents more or something like that. I realize they do it because people will go for it, but I order the size I order because that’s the size that I want. If I wanted their suggestions I would ask, otherwise they should just butt out of my purchase decisions.
Incidentally Syriana was good, but it’s very complicated and rather dense. I was lost during a couple of the storylines so I was hoping during a lot of it that I’d be able to get back into it and understand what was actually going on. The storylines combined rather well by the end and I got the basic gist of it, but it would take another viewing to fully understand it.

I almost forgot about this one, good thing I keep a little notebook in my bag that I check periodically for old ideas I thought of while I was out of the apartment. This happened during that screening of “A History of Violence” a few weeks ago. It happened before the movie started but this woman was giving the mother of all Chinese food orders over the phone. I was wondering when it was for since she was ordering before the movie and it would be done long before the movie was over. Or maybe it was an advance order for a party later on or something she was just going to pick up for the family before going home? It really was a HUGE order though, the thing about the 2-liter bottles of soda creates images of lots of food being involved.
