I don’t remember when I decided to do this comic (I tend to sit on movie theater comics because I hate drawing all the seats and people), but it seems nowadays there’s always at least one person or couple who leaves the theater before the movie is over. Why??? I understand not everyone likes to watch all the end credits like I do, but you’ve already stayed for so long it’s not like it’s going to be difficult to get out of the theater because of a huge crowd or anything? Was it because they disliked it only enough to see the climax but forget about the denoument? I really would like to ask someone this.

It’s getting sort of difficult (and will get increasingly difficult) to do proper anti-Valentine’s Day comics. For that matter coming up with what to do the day of will probably be the same. I wish that it would actually be hard to get a ticket for something like Rambo on Valentine’s Day because of the singles (or couples) having ironic Valentine’s Day dates. If there were any place where that were the case I would believe it to be New York.
I’m trying to remember if I’ve actually gone to a movie on Valentine’s Day like my comic character does, but I don’t know that I have. I think the tradition is to watch a movie at home which doesn’t fit the mood. If you’re reading this at night I’m probably watching kung fu movies.

I don’t necessarily HATE when people do this in the movie theater so much as I think it’s an exceedingly dumb thing to do. Really, who the hell points at specific things at the screen as if the person they’re with isn’t looking at precisely the same thing? More to the point, by the time they pointed out anything that their friend might’ve missed, it’ll be gone by then. People getting scared at movies I understand, but this type of behavior just makes me do mental facepalms.

I went to see “The Golden Compass” last week. It was playing in the smallest theater in the AMC Empire 42nd street theater (same theater Shaolin Soccer was playing in on OPENING WEEKEND). This is verbatim what happened minus the wiseass remark in the last panel. The guy actually said that the seat was taken by his coat. After a seemingly long silence of misunderstanding the woman in his group sitting two seats over said he could put the coat next to her.
Incidentally, the movie really kind of sucked. Not very cohesive, not dramatic, moved too quickly from set piece to set piece and was just very flat. The flat out most amusing moment was after the polar bear fight where no less than four people in the theater went “DAAAAAAMMMMMNNNN!!!” It was like the reaction to someone getting a severe beating in a kung fu movie, except it was CG polar bears (or ice bears if you prefer). That was pretty hilarious. But yeah, Golden Compass really not good, I’m sure it’s even worse if you’ve read the books.

Literally, there was a person two seats over from me who was asleep during the previews and into the start of the movie. I don’t know how much of the movie he saw (he was lightly snoring at the beginning), but I heard his friend summarizing the beginning of the movie. Could he really have been telling his friend the story of the entire movie? Why not just let him go “see” it again?

I went to see “I Am Legend” on Friday which I liked a lot. Reviewers seem to be lauding the loneliness and Will Smith’s performance but don’t care for the Hollywood action zombie element. I personally didn’t mind the zombie stuff and still was able to enjoy it as a whole. Afterwards I went scrambling to Wikipedia and IMDB for information on how they shot the empty New York scenes.
I wasn’t sure if they were allowed to shut down parts of the city or they just had to abuse their special effects artists or what. Turns out they did get to shut down parts of the city and dress it up with plants from Florida to make it look like the city had become overgrown with plant life after the humans disappeared. Very cool.
In the movie he goes to a video store to “rent” movies. But as anyone who lives in the area knows, the Tower Records he goes to on West 4th street has long since closed and is now empty waiting for a new business to move in.

This was back when I went to see 1408 in theaters. There was a couple next to me where the guy got to be the big man because his girlfriend was scared. Every time she said something to the effect of being scared he gave her a kiss and said “You’re so cute.” Seeing as this was a pretty scary movie this happened CONSTANTLY. The thing is that since the movie was genuinely scary and suspenseful a lot of the time, you could tell the audience was getting antsy. I think one of their coping methods to deal with this was to TALK A LOT. So yeah, lots of running commentary and generally asinine comments. Maybe I just shouldn’t watch scary movies in theaters anymore.

This isn’t so much a pet peeve as it is just an irritation of mine for a number of reasons. You’re sitting in the movie theater, and the movie has already started. Sometimes even you’re most of the way through the credit sequence and a couple people walk in. They look surprised at how many people are in the theater. Then they slowly walk across the front while looking around for a seat, flabbergasted that it’s so difficult to find a seat. Did it not occur to them to come earlier? Did their subway get delayed half an hour and they were actually originally on time? I’m guessing most of the time it’s the former explanation.
That’s the other thing that boggles my mind. An entire culture of people who don’t think to go to a movie early so they can get a good seat. Why should they think to? Their parents never go to the movie early, and neither do their brothers and sisters. What, people actually do that? Is that how they get those seats in the front row with all that leg room? Speaking of leg room I was in the AMC Empire theater in one of the front rows where with your legs stretched out there’s still three or so feet of empty space ahead of me, and somehow this idiot still bumps into my feet while trying to walk by. Dude WTF???

Most of my comics contain things that I would dream of, but would never actually do in real life. This one I actually really want to do. I would love to just pre-empt the person’s text by sending their friend one that says something like “Your friend you’re texting with right now is in a movie theater, please tell him to stop. Sincerely, the guy sitting next to him.” Or I suppose just sending a text to the guy next to you with the same message would be pretty awesome too.
Oh, incidentally this was when I was at the screening of Hard-Boiled for the Asian Film Festival. The guy wasn’t texting throughout the ENTIRE movie, but it happened I’d say at least six times which is definitely six times too many.

I was at the Landmark Sunshine to see “Pan’s Labyrinth” and beat the crowd to the ticket machine because a few minutes after I got my tickets the line went all the way to the concession stand and one machine wasn’t printing. I don’t know how long the line was outdoors but it was super cold so I don’t blame the people who came inside. Still though, if I hadn’t beat the crowd I think I would’ve waited outside rather than hold myself hostage to the hope that the people in front of me could actually work the ticket machine.
And yes, someone did ask why the ATM machine wasn’t being used to purchase tickets.
