I haven’t bought Ritz crackers in a while, but it’s one of the few low sodium products that I’ll buy because regular is just too darn salty. The current box says “Hint of Salt: A Low Sodium Choice.” I can see the brand meetings with survey data indicating not that many people actually know what sodium is. Give it time and I’m sure they’ll dumb it down further.

Yep, I saw it in the supermarket. Well, according to Wikipedia it returned in August 2007 but I hadn’t seen it until yesterday. As for the “new look” it said on the label I really didn’t notice anything different. I guess they just needed the word “new” on it so that people would know it wasn’t an old jar left on the shelf that wasn’t sent back or something.

I bought some of thise lactose free skim milk and surprisingly it doesn’t taste like water. What it does surprisingly taste like is a creamier Lactaid milk with the added sweetness and all. Creamier is not necessarily what I want. I just want some freakin’ lactose free milk that tastes like milk. Why oh why must it only be available (to my knowledge) in the Seattle area? It’s just not fair. Too sweet, it’s like milk that’s had some mildly sugary cereal soaking in it already, not what I need. I just need milk that’s not really watery with a clean finish. Heh, sounds like I’m talking about sake here, but that’s what I want.

The day I figured out I was lactose intolerant was a good day in that I was able to end the occasional mysterious morning stomach aches that I would get. However, it was also sad as there were a number of snacks that I would only enjoy with a nice glass of milk (plus cereal of course). I like peanut butter sandwiches and nutella is the condiment of the gods, but I don’t really eat those anymore. Lactaid pills are okay but don’t always work that well, and for some reason they put more sugar into Lactaid milk making it just not taste all that good.
When I was visiting my sister who at the time lived in Seattle I learned about this milk which has acidophilus which is a bacteria in yogurt. Basically it was regular milk I could drink with no side effects and it tasted great. Tragically this milk doesn’t exist in New York. So when I saw a regular milk carton that says “100% Lactose Free!” The fact that it’s skim is just a smack in the face. ‘Cause if you know me or read this comic regularly, you know how I feel about food which takes out the unhealthy junk that makes it taste good. This includes, but is not limited to: skim milk, Tasti-D-Lite, lowfat Smartfood popcorn and diet Snapple. Bleah. To think there are people who eat low fat microwaved meals, frozen vegetables, diet snapple and skim milk all the time. That’s borderline abuse in my book.

So far only Smartfood is the reduced fat product practically being forced upon me, but after the last time I’ve refused to give in to their tactics. I actually do eat unsalted saltines. I think crackers are the only thing that I’ll eat reduced fat or usually low sodium versions of because the regular brands are too salty most of the time. I just fear a world where the diet or reduced fat alternative becomes the norm and the original flavors are the alternative. It’s almost that way already with some things like the Perdue chicken slices I get which only come in 98% reduced fat now.
All diet Snapple drinks taste like urine as far as I’m concerned. I won’t touch skim milk not just because I’m lactose intolerant, but because it’s like drinking water. Tasty-D-Lite almost seemed like it had taste until I made it past the initial contact on my tongue at which point it melted and turned into air. It’s really quite amazing how something can seem to have all the qualities of ice cream except be completely devoid of any taste whatsoever. It’s almost like tofu in that all that it offers is texture, but even tofu has taste to it.

This is depressing on multiple levels. The supermarket I go to almost never has Smartfood popcorn which is one of my favorite junkfoods. Popcorn is good stuff unto itself, but the white cheddar is pure yum. Plus since it’s popcorn that means you get a full bag instead of a half bag of chips that have settled to the bottom. I love eating a big plate of popcorn with chopsticks while watching TV.
But my supermarket conspires against me because during the once in a blue moon moment they have it they only stock the reduced fat kind and then after that it could be months before they have it again. Or maybe they do have it often and it just goes so fast. Though if that were the case you’d think they’d be smart enough (no pun intended) to stock more of it.
I think I’ve reached the point where I don’t even remember what the original tastes like. To which you might wonder what I’m complaining about. It’s just that while eating something that’s lowfat you can’t help but think that you’re missing out on something and that it could potentially taste a lot better. Same goes for the thin sliced chicken cutlets I buy which now only come 98% fat free. Alas.

The thin-sliced chicken is now 98% fat free. The low-carb bread ordeal was when I was at a supermarket and couldn’t find any regular white bread. I think the 96% fat free roast beef is based off of when I took a plane to Utah and all the cold cut sandwiches on the menu involved some kind of fat reduced meat. There wasn’t a single thing in the menu that wasn’t fat free or didn’t have reduced fat or sodium. At least the soda was still regular.

This happened to me once at a deli I frequent. It’s just that I tend to gloss over the ice cream being at the counter because it’s below my eyeline so all I saw were the dairy substitute ice creams. I understand people eating that stuff if they can’t have dairy, but not so much if they don’t have that reason to fall back on. Healthy desserts suck.
