Actually I think the separate ink cartridges was a great idea, but it’s true that my computer still wants yellow when printing a black and white document. In my printer settings everything is set to grayscale with no color settings whatsoever and yet I still get an error message telling me I can’t print unless I have one of the colors. I figured out that if I just pause the printer queue and resume it, the printer will print it out with no fuss at all. I have to do it every single time I print, but I like it because I feel kind of like I’m tricking the computer.

While running errands yesterday I stopped by my now former morning deli place to tell them that I wouldn’t be coming every morning anymore. I gave them a little something in their tip jar which can’t really make up for an entire year, but I wanted to show my appreciation. It was actually two guys at this deli. If one didn’t get me then the other would and pretty much every day they did it with a smile. I’d line up, give a smile and a nod and they’d say “raisin!” and I’d get my bagel probably faster than the guy in front of me waiting for his food.
We shook hands and I bid them farewell. We’ll see where my next job puts me. If I end up working in the same area of course I’ll head back there, but more likely I’ll be looking for bagel man 3.0.

I’m glad I never got this question when I was on a job interview because as you can guess I hate it with a fiery burning passion. Reason of course being that I never have an answer for it. I don’t plan my life much further ahead than a few months at most, and that’s only in terms of vacation plans or conventions I want to go to.
Though I’ve been thinking about it more and more because lately I’ve felt a stuck, and not entirely sure of what my ambitions are at this point in my life. I still enjoy doing the comic, and it would be great if I could keep the momentum up like I have been the past couple years. I just need some other project outside of my job to work on, because I’m starting to think the job I’m at isn’t something I want to build a career on.

This strip is dedicated to all the film school graduates out there who feel like they’re a failure, because they don’t have a job “in the industry.” Just a little reminder that you are not alone in thinking that.
This is actually a true story that happened to a friend of mine from film school. This friend has had some paying film production jobs since graduation, but has his job at a video store to support himself when he doesn’t have those kinds of jobs. He was at a bar where he bumped into two people he knew from film school, both of which were working at the bar. The three of them shared a moment of relief in knowing that they were all in the same boat over at least a year since graduation.

I don’t remember how many comics I ended with “still unemployed,” and I could full well go back and look but I’m feeling lazy right now.

This first strip is modeled after the computer lab that I worked in while at NYU and the exact seat that the TA’s used in that lab. I changed it later on because it’s kind of awkward drawing the characters from the back. Plus it’s plain easier to draw the character sitting at a desk than this setup here. The computer lab I worked in was kind of badly set up in that the TAs always had their backs to the people in the office making it look like they were busy and unapproachable all the time when usually we’re just obsessively checking our email (at least, that’s what I was doing).

Most of the time telling yourself not to be nervous is what is going to end up making you nervous. Kind of like when people accuse me of things that I haven’t done and I start smiling and laughing because they make me nervous. This is of course makes it look like I’m just a tremendously bad liar. The “eek” is something I remember from a Fox Trot strip where Peter is on the phone to order Bruce Springsteen tickets and in his moment of spastic joy the guy on the other line gets impatient and hangs up.

“You should here from us soon.” I remember hearing that. I think they forget to mention the rest of the sentence which would be “…if you call us later.” No one who ever decided not to hire me called me to tell me that. I had to call them all to find out that I wasn’t accepted. One other time I had gotten a job interview with Magnet Media who does video tutorials for things like Final Cut Pro. Then later on I was at the Apple Store sitting in the back of the theater and the guy who interviewed me was talking to someone about all the cocky film students they’re interviewing who are freshly graduated. I should’ve turned around and made a wiseass comment, but I just sat there kind of pondering the irony of the situation.

This is actually a swipe at the NYU computer lab I worked at when I was in school. My boss was a great guy, but very reluctant to do upgrading of any sort. We weren’t even on Mac OS X by the time I left and were still on G4s which the school had purchased my freshman or sophomore year. The most annoying thing about that is you have new freshman who are coming in with a brand new computer bought by their parents and then complaining about your facilities. Sorry, but it’s a tad easier for individual students to get new computers than it is for us to swap out the entire computer lab.
Oh wait, I got off topic. I was talking about how our computer lab was kind of lame. It actually wasn’t so bad, but it was very irritating to find out about other facilities around campus which were getting nicer computers than us. Especially the computer lab on West 4th street where they all had Apple LCD displays which is just a tremendous waste of money. But when you’re dealing with a school where a lot of money goes in and out, sometimes you need stuff that looks good to impress the investors. Which I understand, but still think is dumb.
