I know everyone uses their subway time differently, but I’m one of those people who see it as a time when I can really focus on something and get stuff done. Most of the time it’s recreational activities like listening to podcasts, playing games on my Nintendo DS, or reading. It’s one of the things I know I’d miss if I moved somewhere I had to drive to and from work each day. It could take the same amount of time, but the number of things I’d be able to do during my commute would be reduced dramatically. The subway for all its crazy people and such is still ironically enough one of the most distraction free places in my day. At work or at home I have boundless ways to entertain myself or RSS readers to check, but the subway is a pure environment where I’ll focus on one thing.

I think I need new headphones. My left earphone doesn’t work very well, and briefly I flirted with the idea of walking down the street looking downward because that was one of the few times the music came out fine out of both ears. Then it seemed like when I elevated the place where the two ears connected on the card that it worked, but then it looked like I was holding an earpiece or something. I think I just need new headphones.

As I type this my iPod is being restore to factory defaults, I have no idea if this is going to work. I have an old 3G iPod which lately hasn’t been working for much longer than a commute one way yet the battery still shows half full. I’ve even replaced the battery once since my initial purchase. Thanks Apple.

I think sometimes maybe I’ll idly bite my headphones, but this guy was seriously going at it for at least three subway stops up until he got out of the train.

That’s right, now I’ve seen people sharing TWO sets of headphones at the same time. This time it was two guys though. I suppose they could’ve been a couple but they looked more like they were just friends.

This drives me insane whenever I see it. So many people out there just don’t care at all if their headphones are in a twisted bunch while they’re wearing them. I can’t help but think about how easy it would be to undo if they wanted to do it.

I don’t know how well this works with other people’s iPods but it often works very well for me. Maybe my old 3G iPod has a crappy shuffle algorithm or maybe the shuffle isn’t as random as Apple has sometimes claimed it to be. Either way I know that my iPod the vast majority of times prefers to play the songs it’s already played a million times from the same album. So one time I left shuffle off by accident and it was the first time it felt like the songs were really random. Then I realized they were playing in alphabetical order which if you think about it is pretty random if you have enough songs.
Since my battery is old (on its 2nd battery) I’m often trying to conserve power. The best ways are to turn off the backlight, “sound check” and shuffle because then songs are loaded into RAM which means the hard drive can stop spinning which takes battery power.

Yep, the iPod touch is now out, and yes I want it bad. I fully admit to watching all of Steve Jobs’s keynote speeches, but I try my hardest to not become a Mac zombie who believes the man can do no wrong. But dammit sometimes that drool just comes out without me noticing! Yeah 16GB is pretty paltry considering I want to use this thing to watch video with, but my entire music collection is only 13GB and half of that is podcasts which I’m mostly not going to re-listen to nor do I need them on my iPod all the time. Plus I don’t usually listen to my entire iPod which means I’m listening to even less music.
Yes, I’d love for it to have at least the 30GB that my current old 3rd generation iPod, but dammit I’ve been waiting for this one ever since they announced the first video iPod. The big question now is do I get the free engraving and if so what do I put on it? Yes, I AM a consumer whore.

I am and continue to be a whore for these presentations because they’re fun in that tremendously computer geeky way that only Steve Jobs can make them. I’m still waiting for the full screen iPod that will inevitably come out, but actually OS updates are one of the few things that actually matter to me since I’m not in the habit of upgrading or buying any new hardware every six months. I think mostly I’m excited about the Spaces feature and also the Quick Look feature since I’m constantly quitting my apps before I realized I pressed Apple-Q instead of Apple-W so that should save some time. Everything else is mostly aesthetic eye candy and stuff. Stacks is a pretty cool organizing feature too. How big a geek am I that I remember at least a couple years ago when it was announced Apple patented this feature? I know it wasn’t last year so it must’ve been quite a while ago. I try to deny it at times but I’m such an Apple whore.
