I swear that yesterday I shared a subway ride with Travis Bickle. For those who don’t remember, that’s Robert DeNiro’s character from “Taxi Driver.” The guy had the same mohawk and nearly the same sunglasses. The outfit wasn’t 100% the same, but it was very likely that this was his costume for Halloween and he was just kind of stuck with it since he actually shaved his head. I wanted to get a photo because I was sitting directly across from him, but didn’t think I could it without being obvious.

This year I dressed as Moss from The IT Crowd. A while ago the person who introduced me to the show said that I reminded him of the character. I ended up watching the entire show (it’s now all on Netflix streaming).
To me it’s like The Big Bang Theory, but it’s funny. The jokes are very nerdy and the situations feel like just the right sort of exaggerations of real life. One of my favorite episodes is about how they try to fake their way through conversations about sports using certain phrases they learn from a website about faking your way through a sports conversation.
Go watch it!

Like other Halloweens this year’s is basically going to be my friends and I hanging out like normally would, but we’ll be wearing costumes. Last year we went out the night before Halloween because it was a Friday night, and we saw barely a person in costume. Since this year’s All Hallow’s Eve Eve is a Saturday maybe there’ll be more people in costume when we go out. I don’t think I’ll feel self conscious because I’ll have a mask, and having a mask does make you feel like you can do anything. Maybe I still will get some mini peanut butter cups though.
Happy Halloween everyone!

It’s true that I’m a real homebody and enjoy just sticking around at home (especially now that I have an awesome apartment), but I do like going out for drinks with friends which is probably what I’ll be doing today.
The smiley guy’s “costume” is going back to his origins. Basically when I was a kid I used to draw Quincy from “Fox Trot” by Bill Amend. To make that character all I did was get rid of Quincy’s eyes and the nostrils became eyes.
I probably will end up playing a fair amount of games because Best Buy is having a “buy 2 get 1 free” video games sale so I went ahead and got some games that I’ve been holding off on getting for over a year now.

I passed by New York Costume on Broadway last night and seriously the line was at least a block long, it was pretty ridiculous. I wonder how long it took for the person in back to go and get their costume.

I purposely try to avoid sexual humor because my family reads this comic, and there also exists the possibility my cousin and/or his kids read it too. But this one I think about every single Halloween because it’s so true! Everyone’s already in costume so why not? The idea mass simultaneous actions occurring in separate isolated places amuse me to no end.

Offense should not be taken by the person throwing the party that I’m going today, because believe it or not I would rather go to the party than play Final Fantasy XII tonight. Playing video games instead of going to social events is dumb unless you’re doing a favor for a friend, and will need alcohol to get through said partybecause you don’t know or care to know anyone there. I haven’t been in that situation yet, but I wouldn’t feel too guilty about skipping out on that.
However, IF I were forced to go to a party like that on the release date of a new Final Fantasy game five years in coming, that would basically be like an adult’s version of the car ride home from the store. Anyone who played video games as a kid knows what I’m talking about. You’ve been saving up money to get this game you really want, you go to the mall with your mom for the express purpose of getting that game. You buy it, all is well and good and you get in the car. THEN your mom realizes she needs to go grocery shopping, thus delaying your gameplay time. So the only solace you have is in reading the user manual because it’s the closest you’ll get to playing the game for maybe an hour.

Weird thing about Halloween this year is that it seems like no one has any sort of plans for it. Maybe it’s because it’s on a Monday or just some general vibe going through the air. Oh well. In 2008 it’ll be on a Friday night like it’s supposed to be.

So I went to the haunted house in the East Village yesterday with a bunch of friends. I had heard about this haunted house a few times before about how scary it was and that it was really ultra popular and famous. I read an article online about how it was developed to have highly psychological terror instead of the more conventional people in costumes with chainsaws and things of that nature. In the article they talk about how they put a call out to artists, designers and other creative types to design rooms to be used for the haunted house. They received over a hundred responses and they whittled them down to the thirteen scariest and I guess that’s what I saw last night.
Not so scary really.
I think I could’ve gone for some more people in masks and scary makeup trying to grab me from the darkness, because this stuff wasn’t that scary. I could very easily see how some people would be completely freaked out by several of the rooms if not all of them, but I guess I’ve watched too many horror movies or I’m just really jaded. I even saw some people coming out who looked rather distraught and one woman looked like she was crying a bit.
In addition to the basic setup of each room (the backgrounds and details are missing from this comic for simplicity sake) they had some people here and there who would jump out at appropriate times, but even those weren’t that scary. The scariest part for me was this strobe light hallway with some people in makeup and this one section that was completely dark in a narrow hallway where basically you had to grab onto the person in front of you to get by. Other than that it was obvious the limitations of the rooms and where people could jump out from and since you were expecting it there wasn’t much impact.
Though in retrospect I was pondering the inherent difficulties of doing a good haunted house. You’d think that having something really jump out at you could be tons scarier than watching it in a film, but then again, in real life you understand that there’s really only so much they can physically do. I’m curious what some of the great Japanese horror film directors could come up with in a haunted house. Now that would be worth seeing ’cause I’m sure they could think up some really freaky stuff.
The thing is that I had really much higher expectations not just because of the reputation, but because most New Yorkers are so jaded that need some extra oomph to freak them out. So you’d think that the New York artists would understand this and go that extra step to find something to push them over the edge. Sadly this didn’t seem to be the case.
