I think this every single time I make a food that sounds like brains squishing or a movie character where someone is digging around the innards of an animal or human being. Or of the Tauntaun Han Solo squishes Luke into in The Empire Strikes Back. If I were a sound designer I’d probably have the biggest library of squishy sound effects right now.

Yep, our peeler mysteriously vanished without a trace. I know that I cut off more carrot than I usually do with a peeler but it wasn’t actually as horrific as I thought it would be. I think I pictured myself hacking off entire chunks of the carrot with barely a piece leftover to cook. But it didn’t take long and there was plenty of carrot for dinner. We just got a new peeler which probably means that the old one will take this time to reveal itself.

As much as I love gadgets I always like it when analog solutions prevail over high technology. We were in the supermarket thinking about making salad dressing. While Anna was looking up a recipe on her phone I picked up a bottle to look at ingredients. Of course, looking at ingredients doesn’t make a recipe, but if we had no smartphone it would’ve been a good cheat sheet.

I’ve probably had this box since I graduated college. Still haven’t eaten it yet, but it’s just dried pasta and cheese powder, right? Actually I once had some rice noodles (somen) that was also from a similar time period and it was perfectly all right. I’ll probably do another comic when it’s actually consumed.

I’ve had the same kitchen knife I had since I was a Sophomore at NYU. Though only last year did I buy a sharpening stone. Usually after I sharpen my knife it’s during a stretch when I’m not cooking either because of social obligations or general laziness. Fortunately this time I had stuff to cook so I had a lot of fun chopping onions and chicken.
Do not be disturbed by my taking great joy in sharp objects, no really.

Before you ask whether or not he touched any of those ingredients with his hands, be reminded that it’s all make believe. Little side note, the dog poop is one of the first things that I drew when I was copying the drawings out of comics as a child. I had a ton of Doraemon comics (translated into Chinese though so his name was Xiao Ding Dong) and that’s how the mangaka drew poop of various types. I thought it was really funny so I remember using up sheets of paper trying to get it just right. I also used to make that shape in ceramics class or with silly putty when I had it.
Anyway, it’s officially summer and the stench of Chinatown is only going to get worse. If you walk around the Grand Street subway station in the evening either during or after business hours you’ll get a whiff of that unique Chinatown smell that’s an amalgam of all the things you don’t want to smell, COMBINED. Don’t ask me why I put Chinese cabbage in, I’m not saying it’s a bad thing because I really like Chinese cabbage (good in soups), I just needed another ingredient.

I never saw this show, but my mom sometimes tells me about how terrible most of the cooking shows on Food Network are. She told me about someone who heated up oil and then added water after that. I think the result wasn’t nearly as funny as this would be to see, but it definitely didn’t sound like a cooking show anyone should be learning from.
