I saw this cute traffic guy at a film set in Chinatown one night. I don’t remember how the light was so for all I know the shadow I added could be entirely wrong.

This is at Lafayette and West 3rd Street. When I went to NYU there was a diner here that I went to a handful of times. Then for whatever reason they closed and were closed for years and years. Recently I passed by and the building was plain not there. When I got home to Massachusetts there are always things different because I only get back there every few months at most. New York however has a much easier time of making you feel old with its constant changing. Weird to see buildings suddenly demolished (or built for that matter) all the time. Yet, the scaffolding still stays. Hmmm.

This both does and doesn’t make sense to me. We like to think that advertising doesn’t affect us, but it so does. When you’re choosing a shampoo and you don’t recognize any of the brand names you tend to assume that they’re sketchy so mentally it’s safer to go with the one you know the name of.
This comic came from the building that was being built on Houston and Broadway (it’s since been completed) and I saw that there was a big banner with the name of the welding company. I suppose there’s the possibility that there’s someone out there who needs welders and might consider calling these people because they worked on this building? Who knows. But of course the average person cares jack about who did the welding of the sneaker store they’re shopping in.

It’s very disapponting when you realize that so much of what goes on in the subway or on the street in the way of construction is just upkeep for maintaining facilities like that. Only the major subway line changes that happened in the beginning of 2004 had any kind of positive effect on the subway. Everything else just puts things back to normal when the construction is over.

There was a time when it seemed like the construction on one of the primary subway lines I take would never end. During that time taking it on the weekends meant that getting into Manhattan would take at least ten to fifteen minutes longer than usual. It doesn’t sound like much when you read it, but when you’re in a subway car and you’d rather be somewhere else five minutes can be too long.
