Watchmen has been on my reading list for a very long time, probably since freshman year of college or so. I don’t remember why but I was thinking something like “What would superheroes be like in the real world?” My friend told me to read Watchmen. But alas I haven’t got around to it until the impending release of the film gave me a deadline to read it. So right now I’m about halfway through reading it during my down time that I have at work, but I refuse to read it in the subway for fear of being judged like this. I’m self conscious like that.

The manga I’m talking about is Iron Wok Jan which is a manga all about Chinese cooking. I like all sorts of food manga and anime, and this is the only one right now that’s in English which has enough cooking to keep me interested. The only thing I don’t like about the manga is the almost completely unsympathetic annoying protagonist and the GIGANTIC BOOBS the two female lead characters have. It’s seriously grotesquely unsexy, and at times I just use my thumb to cover them up.
I picked up for volumes at Otakon for $5 each so I’m tearing through those volumes right now. I was reading Volume 12 on the way to work and the latter part of it was a battle using liver. Specifically, the antagonist was an annoying rich boy using super luxurious foie gras from France. I’ve had foie gras one time in my life so I remember basically what it tastes like.
So there I am sitting on the subway imagining this deliciously melty food in my mouth and then I go to the deli to get a toasted raisin bagel with cream cheese. I ate my usual amount but damn if it wasn’t unsatisfying. It’s just like with Iron Chef, the ideal time to watch/read is when you’re eating. Preferably really good food, but I don’t read manga during dinner so that doesn’t happen anymore (my family used to watch Iron Chef religiously during dinnertime).

I recently finished watching the anime of Nana (if there’s not going to be another season there’s going to be hell to pay) so only thing left is the manga and the music from the anime. I’m caught up with the manga currently, but it’s really good so I would like to have it someday. Only thing that pisses me off is it’s one of the manga that hasn’t made it to the U.S. completely intact. Naruto had some middle fingers removed (nothing like flipping off someone with your FIST), Full Metal Alchemist had a crucifixion image redrawn and from what I hear some female nudity was removed from Nana either by some sort of censoring or redrawing by the original artist.
Yes that’s right, girls who read comics marketed towards them can’t see depictions of boobs despite the fact that they themselves have boobs. I know there are guys who are going to read Nana (I’m one myself), but really the key demographic in the United States is younger women.

I actually did clean my apartment pretty thoroughly this weekend. I haven’t done a good cleaning in quite some time. I still have giant piles of DVDs sitting around my apartment because aside from my TV stand and its inefficient shelf space I don’t have another shelf for my DVDs. Partially because I don’t know where I would put one, but mostly out of sheer laziness. My desk is usually the messiest because that’s where random bits of mail and giant piles of DVDRs and CDRs sit around for months on end, and it tends to be the last thing I get to so by then I’ve run out of momentum.
So I did all my dishes, put away my recycling and even scrubbed my tub which was getting kind of discolored. Plus I think my drain was a little clogged so I dumped some Liquid Plumber down it. Actually scrubbing my tub was pretty gross because I was running the water, but the water didn’t drain fast enough so then I had all this gunk floating around in the water. So then I got out of the tub, let it drain, run the water more and then finished off. My bathroom is really dusty for some reason, I don’t know where it comes from, but the rim of my tub will get dust on it almost every single day. Plus I had a lot of stray hair around too.
If you’re not disgusted yet then read this paragraph. I have this long hallway at the entrance of my apartment (I’ve lined the walls with movie posters and wall scrolls, sort of a mini gallery) and this hallway seldom gets cleaned because I’m only in there when I leave and come home. Plus there’s a closet in there so that’ll be the other reason. So since I’m not there often I just assumed it could only really get dusty in there from me treading all over with my dirty boots. I got out my swiffer and ran it along the hall. I think I collected enough hair to make a wig for that girl from The Grudge. Plus I found a dead roach.
So yes, apartment is mostly clean. Dead pests have been smashed and thrown away, computer space has been freed up, DVDRs and CDRs are safely put away in organized CD wallets, tub is clean and all’s well in the world. Except for my lack of a DVD shelf, I’m working on that. Oh, and I have a mirror I haven’t mounted on my door yet.

So yes, this happened to me last Friday. I was in the midst of a pretty crappy night so I decided to go and buy some comics. I’ve been reading “Vagabond” by Takehiko Inoue which is a really amazing manga. It’s a retelling of the story of Miyamoto Musashi the famous samurai who wrote “The Book of the Five Rings” and is the character for the Samurai Trilogy starring Toshiro Mifune. The manga is gorgeously illustrated and the story is very good, but definitely not for the faint of heart because it’s pretty violent. In fact, the latest issues are being shrink wrapped along with other graphic mangas like “Samurai Executioner” which is also very good.
I had gone to the comic book store a couple times in the past few weeks hoping to get issue 19 because it had been a while, but it was never there. Then I go on Friday and find them loaded to the gills with issue 20!!! Not one copy of 19 was available so of course I couldn’t just get 20. Going to try again this week.

It’s funny how these conversations occur. We’ll talk about the implausibility of something in a movie, yet ignore the fact that the movie is about a guy who got superpowers when he was bitten by a spider. I admit to doing this on occasion, but I think I have pretty good perspective because I don’t obsess about it. For me it’s usually something that I find amusing to nitpick. Like in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” I always wondered where Angel got his fancy clothes.
There’s a website out there devoted to bad movie physics, pointing out things like how the Hulk can’t technically gain mass and volume at the same time. Also things like how laser beams almost always show up even when there’s no smoke in the air. At a certain point this kind of nit-picking is way too nerdy and you need to lighten up a bit.
