It’s been over 100°F where I live in LA this past weekend and conveniently my living room a/c is broken leaving only the one in my bedroom. The problem of course is that an a/c in a separate room isn’t enough to cool the rest of the apartment. Uni and Ebi seemed pretty unaffected by the heat but I still worried about them. I assumed they’d go to where it was cooler in the apartment but for the vast majority of the time they preferred to be where I was. Awwwwww…

A few of my neighbors in my apartment complex have cats. One I almost never see the neighbor and they leave the windows open so the cats can see outside.
However this particular neighbor’s window I pass on the way out to exercise in the morning and when I come back. Their cat is only very occasionally on the cat tree by their window, but more often one of the residents is in their kitchen with the window wide open in whatever they probably sleep in. I always look over very quickly to see if the cat or resident is there, but try to make it quick because I’m afraid of this scenario in the comic playing out.
I finally got a sofa recently and I’m already loving it partly because it’s something else to lie down on, but also because Uni and Ebi will rest on the backrest so I’ll have them at my head when I’m playing games or watching TV. They only occasionally join me on the actual sofa, but I’m loving it so far.
I worry especially because I listen to music fairly loud and the car has pretty good insulation against sound.
EDIT: Success! I think the problem with the website was something about how my hosting changed which FTP server I was on, so I just re-uploaded the comics from the last few days and everything seems ok now!
Yesterday was Uni and Ebi’s 2nd birthday. Actually, I don’t know precisely when it is but that’s the date that was settled upon. I gave them some of the expensive cat food I left for the cat sitter to give to them while I was away, but of course they ignored it. Then I forgot to get them the other not quite as expensive cat food, but more food-looking-than-fancy-feast. I’ll get it today and all will be well.
Look at how tiny they were at three weeks old! Back then they didn’t even have names. Ebi was “Black” and Uni was “Grey” but then it turned out they were both just black cats 🙂
After more and more Googling I found a web page that mentioned the probiotic supplement “Fortiflora” is something that cats LOVE, and they’ll eat any food with it mixed into it. Uni and Ebi ate the nice cat food I got them AND they had some Fancy Feast that they wouldn’t TOUCH in the past couple days.
Now excuse me while I stuff this post with keywords so that other people whose cats are otherwise normal and check out as normal at the vet might find this and get this knowledge. I originally had Fortiflora to put in their food for when I was away (because when I’d get back their poop would be kind of runny). But I had no idea that it was like a super appetite stimulant for cats. Uni even started clawing up my leg when I started sprinkling it on his food.
It can be easily bought on Amazon and you only need to use a fraction of a packet per serving. It doesn’t even matter that it’s expired because the probiotic part of it isn’t the important part, it’s the ingredients that interest the cat (though checking reviews it seems some cats don’t like it, but the majority seem to).
SO. If your cats suddenly stop eating the food they normally eat with no problem then try adding Fortiflora to their food to see if it gets them to eat! Of course I MUCH prefer this to trying to give appetite stimulants to my cat and I think it seems more likely to work since it’s directly in their food.
The number of cans I’ve gone through that either weren’t eaten or were only partially eaten I think is much greater than what I ended up drawing here. Yesterday, one of the new brands of cat food I tried on Uni and Ebi was met with immediate success! It was a bittersweet moment because I was super happy to see them eating a whole can’s worth of food, but also I’m worried that it would be short lived.
So far they both seem to be eating this new brand, though annoyingly Uni seems to prefer the fish and Ebi prefers the chicken. Also it seems like their eating schedules might be a bit out of sync right now. I ordered some more higher quality cat food that hopefully they’ll also like. I just want them to be eating during the time that I’m away at PAX and New York so that there’re no emergencies with the pet sitter. I think just in case I’ll leave some emergency “real tuna” with the sitter if she sees that they’re really not eating anything.
Also, it should be noted that PETCO requires a very specific return-to-store receipt if you’re trying to return something you bought from PETCO.com. I first went with the shipping receipt, then I came back with the email receipt and then they told me specifically where to get the receipt I needed. But now I don’t even know if they’ll eat any of the fancy feast that I have in the apartment anymore.
I guess I shouldn’t have written about the vet visit in my last post because this is pretty much how it went except with more squirming by Uni and Ebi. I went and got a large variety of foods and they seem to be eating with a bit more zeal than they were earlier. I still don’t feel like there’s an infallible cat food I can give to them right now that they’ll just wolf down.
