The Cablevision worker helping me disconnect my service was very nice and sounded very excited at the idea of being in California in the warmth. Actually, the reaction I get from people when I mention San Diego is probably 80% about the weather and the rest is a mix of various things like “What’s out there?” and “I don’t really know what’s there. The zoo?”
Actually this is the second or third type of this mail that I’ve received. This time it’s basically the same envelope, except the first time it said “IMPORTANT INFORMATION ENCLOSED.” Either Cablevision broke some rules with the disguising of their mail or they realized it didn’t work so this time it actually says the price offer for TV, internet and phone. This kind of defeats the purpose of disguising the advertisement as something else though.
Seriously Cablevision, enough already.
Luckily I had the first bill I received before switching to paperless statements. Seriously though, someone else must’ve run into this sort of situation before. In related news Optimum called me once again to try to sell me cable TV. They also like sending me postcards periodically trying to sell the triple play deal. I think I need to tell them to put me on a don’t mail/don’t call list.
It’s only been about two weeks since last they called (though looking at my missed calls I think they tried calling me sooner) but Cablevision is back trying to “save me money.” They’re doing it with horribly uninformed people though. This phone call went about this verbatim. The guy said that DTV wasn’t “turned on yet” when actually it’s already on, and that after June 12th the analog systems are being turned off. He didn’t even know that modern TVs don’t need an additional converter box!
All I could think of was the people he’s got to buy cable TV because they were all misinformed. I like to think that after my phone call he went around telling his friends and family they don’t actually have to get cable for the DTV switch.
I have a friend at work who heard about this deal, and I think he wanted to live vicariously through someone with this deal. Thing is though that it’s only for Clearview Cinemas of which none I regularly frequent. Basically on Tuesdays you can get two free movie tickets and on other days you can get discounted tickets for $7. Pretty nice deal if I had need for cable TV and a landline phone. Though if I had cable, that could mean I watched TV more which would mean movie watching time being eaten up.
One thing about watching over the air TV is that every other commercial is a cable TV commercial and/or Verizon FiOS toting its 100 HD channels. As it is I don’t watch many TV shows, and I can now watch stuff like The Daily Show on Hulu which means there’s nothing that I really need on cable. If anything, the frequent cable TV commercials made the call shorter because I didn’t need the “triple play” explained to me. I think what I enjoyed most was telling them I didn’t have cable and didn’t want any more channels.
