Anna and I have never been to San Diego Comic-Con, but now that we’re living in San Diego it seemed like this year would be the first year that we would. Then the tickets sold out in about 90 minutes.

Yesterday was the day that the resale badges (canceled tickets etc) were going to be sold. They had about 5000 of them and they were to go on sale at 8:00 AM PST. We got up at 7:30 and huddled in front of our computers. We had already created our member IDs and had the URL for the resale page up and ready for when it went online. I even double checked that my computer clock aligned with the atomic clock.

As soon as the seconds went from :59 to :00 I started pressing reload like a madman. The screen popped up and I pressed the big green button. A new page opened and it said I was #630 in line! The page refreshed every two minutes and at a certain point, my place in line started getting closer to the front. I was checking Twitter to see there were already people miffed that they didn’t get into the virtual waiting room.

I knew that each person could only get four badges so I knew even if everyone bought 4 that there’d still be some left. Then I started thinking of ways to optimize the speed of the transaction. So I typed out my credit card number and copied it to my clipboard, had my address information ready and waiting so I could cut and paste that quickly too.

My turn came up and BAM in a manner of seconds I bought us each a pass for Friday and Saturday!!! The only panel we’re very interested in is the Naughty Dog panel on Friday because the actors from Uncharted are going to be there. Other than that we’re just going to soak it in, take it easy and just see what the convention is all about.

Yes, this is probably what EVERY person who got a resale badge went through during the half hour or less that it probably took to sell out of all those badges. Someone is going to have to figure out how to remedy this situation because it’s only going to get worse. I feel bad for the people who can’t be at their computers at the moment popular convention badges go on sale. It’s to the point now where you have to follow the Twitters of the conventions so you know the SECOND badges go on sale.

Ridiculous indeed.
