A San Diego friend of Anna’s was in NYC for her vacation so we took her to Ess-a-Bagel to show her a real New York bagel. This comic is pretty much what happened verbatim. I think my most optimistic predictions for a bagel outside of New York would be that the bagel was of the quality of an average deli bagel.

Einstein Bros Bagels is apparently a nationwide chain. I have one New Yorker friend who had it in Florida and says that it’s of the round-bread variety of bagel. But it’s my policy to know something before I criticize it, so I’ll taste it for myself when I get there. Of course a good bagel place would be awesome, but I think more of me wants it to be bad, because I want the NYC bagel to remain a special thing.
