There’s a nice layer of dust on my G5, and also thick layers of dust coating its innards. I’m kind of curious just how clean I could get it with some canned air. A friend of mine once took his work G5 to a repair shop and they asked him “Do you have carpets in your office?” Apparently there was so much dust that’s what was causing the computer to malfunction.
Who knows? Maybe if I give it a proper dusting it’ll miraculously be quiet again. I do admit I’m also curious what would happen if I wiped it clean and reinstalled the OS. Are the constant loud fans a wear and tear thing or a software thing? I know that one of the big things Jobs touted at its release was how it has 9 fans but it’s so quiet, and that the software dynamically activates fans as needed.

I have a old 2002 Dell too, its not loud but it sure does get dirty in there. Sadly enough its been very long since I opened it up, this comic reminded me. Now I’l scared….
Most likely wear and tear over software. Though if the os controls the speed based on the temp and it’s jam packed full of dust it may be getting to hot in there and causing the fans to run at 100% all the time. Certainly worth a try if you don’t plan to ditch it.
