I wouldn’t say I have a rigorous testing phase before I decide to finally take something from off the street, but I’ve definitely learned my lesson a few times. First things I usually check for is bad smell, weird fluids and the general condition. For several months I had this chair in my apartment that I took off of the street. This was one of many that was on the street, but my apartment wasn’t that big so I only took one.

This chair looked pretty new, it didn’t have have big scratches on it or splintery wood so I took it. Then later on I realized that the legs of the chair had a lot of heavy twine wrapped around it in an attempt to hold the legs together. The chair didn’t look like it should be sat on too much, but it still looked nice so I kept it and used it to put my bag on top of. Though inevitably if someone came over and reached for it I had to tell them that they shouldn’t sit on it. Eventually I got rid of it because it was just too much of a tease to have a nice looking chair in the apartment that no one could sit on.

Still, the best find I’ve had by far is something I found with a roommate when I was still in college. That would be the foot rest I have which looks like Shaun the sheep from “Wallace and Gromit.” He’s kind of dirty and he has more stuffing on his stomach than his back which means I put some folded sheets on top in order to rest my feet comfortably but he’s just SO CUTE.
