This is actually a true story, but I wasn’t the one who did this to the hapless tourist. In my New York Humor class that I took at NYU we were swapping our own New York stories, and this was one a girl in my class had. She was just so pissed at this tourist wanting to go to the World Trade Center she sent him uptown on the A-C-E. It’s kind of funny, but it’s also a really cruel thing to do to someone.

I get rubbed the wrong way when I see big groups of tourists saying they want to go to Ground Zero, but I can still understand why they’d want to. It just sounds so wrong when they excitedly rattle off a list of places the want to see like Central Park, The Empire State Building, Ground Zero. The delivery and exuberance involved is what makes it feel wrong to me.
